Krone big M

Are they notorious for blowing up ?

Not that I’m aware off but you have to remember they are a seriously capable machine, there isn’t much to touch one for work rate but they don’t half get through some work. Think of a contractor dropping 10000 acres per year with one, it isn’t going to matter if the field is on its end, the grass over grown like bullwire, that grass is getting dropped.

Fantastic machine without a doubt but you would need to be mindful of the pitfalls generally associated with all top tier high output machines like it.

there were a good amount of the large contractors in Ireland (5000acre +) using Big M 2s going back more than 5years ago. Not near as many now, most have changed to treble mowers. I heard one say, fine troublesome machine they are.
A contractor near me has a big m , it’s a few years old , he also has tripples , the man mowing can keep a head of the new jd Sp with the big m , he couldn’t keep ahead with the tripples on its own. He’s knocking 5000 acres with it.

Quite a few round here. Nearly if u dont have 1 as a contractor ur gettin left behind but havin said that a local crowd has couple of xerions with triple rear mounted mowers and theyd whip the arse off any big m but obviously they cant autoswath wholecrop and in wet conditions the big m is better as more even weight distribution

Going back to about 2000 the original Big M had a JD engine and JD forager cab plus all 3 mower beds were the same and interchangeable.
The beds were a bit soft, it benefitted from an autolube for all the bearings and it didn't like hills much but you could cut 30 acres an hour even using the mergers in good fields.
Big M2 switched to a Merc engine, different beds and Krone's own cab.
A big step up really but I didn't like the engine much.
After that I lost touch with them but they should have them spot on by now.
300+ hp tractors capable of running triples have made it a bit of a niche product.

Would a Xerion compete with a Big M? More power etc?

Don’t know but at least you can hook the mowers off a xerion and put the hay Bob on after cutting unlike the big M 😂😂
That's really their biggest con, they're a one trick pony but if your operation doesn't require a big tractor for anything else it makes sense.

Back in the day:cool:(y)
