Being as economics will always hold sway I believe Mr. Clarkson is wrong to state it in a black or white situation.......................yes, you could supply 80% of food but if I can supply it cheaper/better then I win.
UK is in a very high cost of production scenario which makes it tough to compete.
But dependency is hard to quantify in economic terms.
Any/ every sector or business gets tempted to shift its production to the cheapest supplier rather than run its own costly exercise. Eventually and inevitably, you become hostage to their price unless you can find an alternative source to control pricing.
British farming keeps the price of imports competitive.
