Potato Prices.

My customers seem to be talking in the range 150-170 for chipping varieties in the midlands, with the expectation being for prices to rise as harvest comes to a conclusion. Reasonable but not exceptional yields, with whispers of a few very poor fields locally.

We are yielding just over 20t/acre on sagitta, fantastic bold sample, not started on markies yet but been having a dig about and they look bloody awful...no size whatsoever . Planted 2 weeks apart . Anyone else had a problem with markies this year ?

Getting 180 for sagitta nice sample but in this day and age still not enough. Seed, blight sprays, fertiliser, bag price all through the roof

Too many farmers when they buy ask ”how much” and when they sell ask exactly the same question. When we start grading we issue a price list which we regularly revise and never move from our price list for anyone. All our customers now know this and almost never query our price. Deciding what that price should be is no easy task but the start this year would be the Fruit Trades Journal wholesale price ex Spitalfields Market with is £320 for whites and £400 for reds. Being a generous sort of fellow and to get them started we would allow the stand holder £50 so delivered Spits for us will be £270 for Whites £350 Reds. Yields are down between 5% and 10% so certainly no excess profit for us to help finance next years costs.

Need to get the media onto 'there is going to be a shortage of potatoes' to get Joe Public into panic buying them, and get the price up. Worked for loo rolls, pasta and fuel.
True story : This happened a long time ago. My mum was at the checkout of a local supermarket ,the woman serving her said to her: " Hey, watch this" then shouted at the top of her voice : " You do know pepper's gonna be short don't you?!" Cue lots of panicking housewives dashing to the condiment shelves and grabbing as many tubs of pepper as they possibly could . Mum then asked : "Really? now pepper's in sort supply?" "Nah" replied the checkout lady "I just fancied a bit of fun that's all!"

We have had several merchants ringing up this week asking when we are going to start bagging, all saying price is 170-180 for good sample of sagitta. Really they want to be starting with a 2 but it will be a few weeks until we start so hopefully they will go up a bit by then.

A lorry driver who came here said his mates second cousin works on a spud farm and heard some local growers are going to have to limit supplies to some merchants, as just not enough to go round.

It’s been a bad year for our markies. I wotsay that they are around 10% down on yield. Been told that markies are 210-220. Agria 240-250. Bagged. Will start bagging beginning of November. Would like to start at 250. Just makes it’s easier to add up. 😉

Is agria a good variety to Grow?

Always commands a premium, but!

Seed expensive, prone to blackleg, doesn’t produce many tubers, can get too big very quickly, hollow hearts, knobbly shape, yellow flesh not good for many outlets except chip shops, yields seem to be decreasing since first introduced.

Oh and you can’t get any seed for next year.

Apart from all that, it’s fairly easy to grow!

Markies really struggled this year here, must have been the cold start?
