Ramblers Map

See the Ramblers Association have a push on opening up new routes. There’s a map with new paths to be verified by “trained volunteers”

We have a route marked for “auditing” but it makes no sense, crossing ditches, thru fences, over banks. Like it’s just been marked off google maps.

Has anyone else got this? I assume a lot do, given the amount of purple routes marked.

Do they get in touch when they do their “audit” or just turn up and skulk about hoping no one notices?

Also doesn’t appear to be any mechanism to get in touch about it.

Local village shop sells maps with paths across the area. It's somehow shows a footpath coming down our drive past the house.
I told them about it but theyre still on display.

I don't get it! With the right to roam people can walk almost anywhere up here. One of our cottages ( old herds house on the hill) had an historic path right through the garden. made for interesting summer days sunbathing for the tenant when the Boys Brigade all trooped past her :playful: . We get folk fishing down the burn, tramping about the hill and we don't mind as long as they don't cause problems. Lambing time can be an issue, most years we get someone at the door with an " abandoned " Blackie lamb, we tend just to say thankyou and not ask about the ewe they saw tanking it up the hill at the same time.

Put in a new track up the side of a field to avoid a neighbouring “landowner” (2ac of garden🙄) as I got sick of the whingeing about tractors going “crazy speeds” (7mph, we checked the gps).

This comes out through at the yard, and we’ve started having folk wandering through, been lifting tatties, so it’s busy and there’s was a fecking jogger thru yesterday, something akin to Captain Speirs dash thru the German lines on band of brothers. Idiot.

That’s not strictly true. There is a code of practice ensuring people rights to privacy and what type of farmed land and when it is that people have access to.

Just checked ours, apparently we have a route right round the yard and a couple others that are access to fields but appear on the map,if I catch anyone trying to walk round the yard there will be consequences!

I’m wondering who it is whose marked these potential routes up.

Some seem designed to cause antagonism

Aspirational or antagonistic take your pick!!!

The Ramblers society are a bunch of morons who would love walk where ever they like, but if you challenge any of them by asking for their home address so that you can "exercise your access rights" over their property they are not so forthcoming!!

Looking at the map for my local area, it looks as if they took a map to the local playschool and let the kids loose with a purple crayon. lots of paths not linked to any core paths or access routes!!

True.

Cant park a car overnight next to a road but can camp in someone’s field without asking

It’s recommended that those inclined stick to boundaries and tramlines in growing crops. How generous.
So with regards to fields with crops the access code says:
When exercising access rights in a field of crops, avoid damaging the crop by:
  • Using any paths or tracks
  • Using the margins of the field (if the margin is narrow or has been planted, avoid causing unnecessary damage by keeping close to the edge in single file)
  • Going along any unsown ground (providing this does not damage the crop)
  • Considering alternative routes on neighbouring ground.
It's actually a good read and quite restrictive.

But it is a code, a guide as to rights and responsibilities. It can be used as a reference, but is not statutory.

You don’t need to ask permission to camp overnight on someone’s land, or to go wandering through a standing crop. It is only expected that you abide by the code when you do so.
