What do we all agree on?

Allowing for the fact there is always at least one idiot who wants to try and stir up trouble whenever possible by disagreeing just for the sake of it, how about a thread in which we see if we have a consensus on whatever issue? I'd like us to cover a great many subjects, some may lead to argument due to political or religious leanings, I guess others will be supported by all, e.g. that the abuse of children should be criminal.

Having close friends who don't share my views on matters of political party, Brexit, abortion etc. but with whom I share a huge number of other beliefs, I genuinely believe that we have far more that we will agree upon than disagree upon. It makes sense to begin with first principles and to work up from them. So, for a start...

I think that there have to be laws binding a society which reflect the morality within it and which, because of that, allow for that society to function properly. And that those laws should apply to all within society, and that they should be made by people chosen and removable by that society.

Anyone want to go against that, or can we move on to what those laws should be?

I couldn‘t possibly comment on the morality or lack thereof in society, and how it should be policed.
However, I’m certain we can all agree on the exact cost of keeping a suckler cow😏.

If a society needs laws that bind a shared morality then obviously that morality is not shared by all. Then we come to laws that are imposed upon a society, so who decides what those laws are ? I refer mainly to laws that curtail a persons freedoms, a couple of the more obvious ones are seatbelts and crash helmets. Less obvious ones are freedom to stroll around naked in public if you so wish.

A prime example of this would be the bloke who is Prime Minister.
Is he any worse than those from a century ago ? Politicians and royal the world over have always used their position to shag about, just as a pretty high percentage of "normal" people do.
Perhaps swingers have the right idea, if you want sex with another person other than your spouse do it together, sex isnt the problem deception and breaking of trust is.

One thing I think we all will agree on is we need better standards from our politicians, world wide and from every political standpoint, not just from a sexual point but integrity and honesty.

How bigs your shovel? It’s a deep deep hole you are about to dig I’d venture.

My firm belief is that the collapse of society and its moral values is down to the collapse of the traditional family unit. This impacts on poverty, mental health and basic respect over a broad spectrum. Society has become very sick and unstable.
Respect left the room decades ago sadly. I used to be afraid of the village copper and if he told you father he’d had words with you - that was worse. I think since the end of WW2 the notion of neighbourliness and the rise in mans affluence has moved people apart hugely. Not sure how we get this back National service perhaps?
