100 percent return on investment my small sheep enterprise returns each year.Cant think of any farm enterprise which generates the same percentage return.As for house being supplied with job theres good reason farmer want some around farm 24/7 simple as and the house should be free cus most farm houses ive seen are kipsTheres everything wrong with a barsteward sheep but each to their own

Is that for an estate? If so you really can’t compare the 36k and 30k. 1000 sheep, 1500 lambs say. At 80£ a head average= 120k, minus 36k. Minus replacement costs, minus rent, minus vets/feed costs. Doesn’t leave a lot of the farmer. If it’s for an estate on the other hand, they have an open cheque book

I think there’s a big difference in how some define the duties of the above roles.
You maybe just a cowman but also do the foot trimming, grazing allocation and some Ai work. Is that still a cowman or is it more of a herdsman? Difficult to draw the line in some places.
What value would you put to each role with a decent house included?

A cowman would treat and trim cows as told/needed
A herdsman would also treat and trim without being asked but also actively look for ways to improve lameness % within the herd along with improving mobility scoring figures
Same with ai, a cowman would serve the cows to the bulls he's told to serve them to whereas a herdsman would choose which bulls to use in order to genetically improve the herd
That's what I have always thought the difference is
