Illness sweeps the UK .

To offer an alternative view.....one of our landladies, a retired GP, says that the 'super cold' everyone is getting is due to having been isolating/ masking up for the last 18 months and thus having lowered levels of immunity. I will agree with her, solely on the basis that I'm fit as a flea and have cocked a snook to pretty much everything we were told to do.

To keep you from being infected, you have to do way more than wear (the correct) masks. Hygiene, distancing and avoiding busy areas are all required too but we've been brainwashed that, if you just wear a mask everything will be just fine.
Its coming up to winter in the UK and there are no restrictions, bugs are going to spread like they always have but this time it will be worse as the population has been in hiding for 18 months.

So things will be worse because people have been "in hiding" not spreading infections and you think we should make it better by wearing masks to stop people spreading infections?

No I was replying to bob who seemed to think just wearing a mask will stop everything, when the reality is the type and way in which most people wear masks doesn't make much difference.
If you really want to stay "safe" you have to do a whole range of things.
NZ saw a rise in RSV cases this last winter, doctors have suggested its because there was little natural immunity as we were locked down early winter 2020.

Every little helps , they'll all be crying when Boris locks down again
Exactly! Wearing a seatbelt or having airbags (poor analogy) won't help you if something heavy drops from the sky on the car, but it will mitigate against more serious injuries in case of many other collisions. Mask wearing doesn't solve everything but apart from anything else it's a reminder that disease is about, it's a reminder to maintain distancing and sanitizing measures and it's also a courtesy to other people. (Sorry - I realize many might need to consult a dictionary for 'courtesy')

Exactly! so we shouldn't attempt to restrict viruses from being transmitted and spread because overall immunity is lowered by this approach

Theres enough dysentry here as it is!! ;) People just need to be aware and do what they feel is safeguarding themselves and others ,If that what they want!
I 'think' we're on the same page there. My concern was with the line
"so we shouldn't attempt to restrict viruses from being transmitted and spread because overall immunity is lowered by this approach" as, for example, putting your hand in front of your mouth when you cough is 'an attempt to restrict viruses from being transmitted' and to me, wearing a mask is a courtesy and a kindness

So you going to wear a mask forever I take it?
I mean if it's the courteous thing to do, why not?
I thought they a misguided and counterproductive attempt to control a respiratory virus.
Down to 5%masks in Tesco(sample size 200) guess everyone being rude in Essex.
