Why won’t Brits pick vegetables for £30 an hour?

I was living rough / sofa surfing in my late teens and broke , my priorities were food , my motorbike and work , got on my feet with no hand outs, I stand by the fact too many have an entitlement disorder ,have the latest everything by all means but dont turn around and say you cant feed yourself ,its BS , the Army feeds its men on less than £3.00 per day , someone on low income can do the same , fresh healthy food is really cheap if you are not idle to prepare it.
So you were a single young bloke with no dependents and presumably a safety network if you messed up.

The Army? WTF has that to do with households? Do you presume they buy food at retail price? Do you know what economies of scale are? Do the soldiers have to cook it themselves after a day at work?

Thought not.

Again, go and volunteer, meet some of these people and then come back to me.

Which only goes to show that you haven't read or understood any calculation I posted above.

Calculations, incidentally that didn't include mobile phone bills or the internet, both of which are pretty much compulsory if you are going to find a job nowadays.

But sure, its easier to blame poverty on cheap electronics when you've never actually had to live on very little.

Food banks are constantly looking for volunteers - I suggest you go along and try actually meeting these people.

Pretty much essential if you are going to book a covid booster as several folk were saying on the Jeremy Wine show earlier today as trying to get 80+ year olds booked up.

And Steve out of the £400 left doesn't the poor lass or lad deserve at least one glass of wine a month. UK housing rental sector is a disgrace. Then having paid said rent promptly for a few years lenders will not use that as a sign the person is sound and require an immense deposit to secure the loan. A bond system should be introduced by government. Doubt these Tories will do that. Labour should pick it up and run with it. After all the Tories are the party of the Boomers.
Labour ? :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

I deliberately made the outgoings as minimum as humanly possible to make my point and hopefully not get all the "but the internet/tv/etc etc is a luxury" responses - I didn't even include heating!

But yes, people are human, and when your existence is sh!t (and even when it isn't) you might like to have a drink now and then, have money to socialise or have a hobby........

It doesn't matter if you earn £1000/month or £4000/ month, the first week you eat steak and the last week you eat beans. People live to their income and there all broke by the next pay cheque.

Yes Steve I appreciate your calculation. My added point was really to stir in that on here folk are generally of the view no dole get to work. But if the rent and bills means there is nought left to have at least a few minutes of pleasure once a month then I empathise with these folk saying 'why the feck'. And I appreciate how the sums as I sub my daughter and son as they start out in low paid work and looking for work. There will be plenty of youngsters without that support.

I did chuckle at this, and I'm sure that the second half of the article actually has a point.

Off you go then, and try and do it whilst in work too.

Oh, and don't just do it for a week or two as a "tourist", do it forever.

Or, get off your arse and volunteer in a food bank. I'll wait.
You`ll be waiting a long time , the lowest pay or benefits pays enough to eat healthily on ,you`d be better educating people on budgeting and food prep/cooking than handing out tinned Spam to them but no one would turn up if you offered classes teaching that which says it all.

In my University days in 1980I lived on the edge of the Scotswood area. And in 1983 Mr M Parris a Tory sychophant to Thatcher was that 'dole tourist' Portillow had a go too later.

Both mellowed with age and when they gave up climbing the greasy pole of the Tory Party 'public service' such a fatuous description I wretch everytime it is said of a politician in the media.

I have a slightly unusual perspective compared to some on here.
I'm from Salford (the greater Manchester one, not the one in the Cotswolds). My grandparents knew poverty unlike most these days have never seen and I've seen modern urban poverty through visiting relatives etc. We moved to Hampshire when I was just about secondary school age, but to a big village with three council estates. I've seen rural poverty too and appreciate the differences (transport to work is a massive one rurally).

I challenge anyone to live on the dole for any length of time. But, this thread is not about that, it's about in work poverty - something that is rising continually. When will the victim blaming stop? How many people have to be unable to feed themselves whilst in full time work before we realise that we are moving closer towards the conditions at the turn of the last century and all of the social ills that entailed?

What next? Bring back the workhouse?

All the social progress my grandfather's generation fought for after beating the Nazis disappearing year on year....
