Ford 4100 connection to hydraulic tipping transport box

Try this;
Connect a pipe to each connector on the tractor, operate lever ram should move one way.
Stop tractor and move lever to release pressure then swap the pipes, then the ram should move the other way.

If this all works ok get another pipe and connector made up to go into the second port as advised above.

Thanks lazy Sid and Lincsman, funny enough I tried that this evening Lincsman and yes, it done exactly as you said. Connection gave me movement one way and then swapping the hoses allowed the ram to move the other way.
So you’re saying to make up another hose and connector and connect to the drop port?
Here’s a pic of the remote valve info from my manual.
Thanks again for all the help, it’s really appreciated.

the thing is even if you sort out the plumbing you'll still have to swap between lift and external service all the time, and because you don't have a valve to control the ram you're going to have movement in the ram as soon as you change from lift to external. it's going to be a pain in the ass if you ask me.

I think you have three options.
  1. Upgrade to a spool valve that will work independantly of the lift quadrant. most expensive solution but best outcome, you will be able to lift or tip without switching anything about
  2. fit an aftermarket spool valve that is fed off the external hydraulics. you will need to switch from lift to external hyrdaulics all the time but the ram won't move every time you do it.
  3. buy a traditional transport box with a latch. not as useful as a power box but will work on your tractor without any cost

I completely agree with JohnBoy. It will be a right ball ache to be forever swapping between 'Linkage' and 'External Services' every time you want to tip the box.

Open the inspection panel on the cab floor, immediately behind the gear levers, take some pics & find out once & for all whether you've already got a (single-acting) spool valve or only a remote lever-operated External Services / Linkage Isolator valve. I fear it will be the latter, but you never know.

I never fitted a spool to a 4000, but 5000 upwards if you had a lever like that is worked all the time independently of the linkage.. like a new tractor today, if you didnt have a lever you used the external service to swap to the standard "tipper" pipe

Same on a 4000
The source of all the trouble is that on Ford 4600s the Ext Services / trailer tipping / linkage isolator valve used to be operated by pulling a small black plastic knob out .... This was situated on front of the transmission tunnel, just behind where the gear levers go through the floor.

However, on 4610s and possibly on later-4600s, they changed this & made the Ext Services valve lever-operated, I guess to make it easier to use. ....... But the lever looks just like a Ford spool valve lever (guess they had some to spare in Basildon?) & it rotates a rod which sticks out of the top of the trans tunnel, just in front of the seat ..... Again, just like a Ford Spool Valve. So you've got the same lever, the same movement, but not necessarily the same valve ...... until you lift the floor & see or, alternatively, see whether moving the lever locks/isolates the 3pt linkage.

This is how I remember it:

When spools were fitted they went through the big grommet at the top of the black cover

That's right ....... But later on they did away with the Black Knob & rod straight onto the front of the ASC Valve (shown in your pic.) and instead made it lever-operated through the grommet you mention. It fooled me when I 1st found one ... thought it was a Spool Valve lever ..... but it wasn't.

Found exactly that setup on a 4110 and also a 4610 chassis yesterday ...... but not sure what Fordskin's 4600 has got because we haven't seen any pics from inside the cab. Guess you can't have an ASC valve and a Spool valve installed at the same time because they fit onto the same place on the hyd top cover.

Surely this ram can be used as a single acting , by connecting the trailer pipe to the upper hose and the lower hose to the QRC on the filler/breather. The linkbox would tip by gravity.

I've used an old dowty exactor type fitting to connect a QRC to the filler on my 6600 , but I've cut a slit with an angle grinder so the back end can still breath.
