How far can you wear down the discs before changing?
Now need a 4th set

will use the 3rd set now they are worn down to 14 and a bit inches and use them as small disc
new set is 16 inches

did this with a big disc where the small disc wears down slower and continued with gd never had new small discs but do replace wobbly bearings

drilling about 3500 acres per year and now will replace the big disc every year
letting it wear down past 14 inches is a false economy

I also check the disc diameter when setting depth especially those behind the tractorwheels /combine track ( on controlled Traffic ) wheat wear can be higher in dry hard years

in all since 2012 been notill except when we diaced after rape the first year we had gd and got murdered by slugs (rained every day between drilling and emergence could not roll and pellets would have washed away )
when ever I have drilled on the green into osr stubble never had a failure and never used slug pellets
this year drilled on the green into linseed /rape 18inches Cover

rule of notill 2 weeks earlier in the autumn is not wrong
if black grass is bad then alter rotation
later drilling only works when it is dry enough for a week after drilling 1 in 5 years at best

I’m interested in knowing more about latest drilling dates. I have got 70 acres of wheat left to drill, the ground is drying up nicely and the next few days look dry here. Are you suggesting that it’s now too late to get good establishment with a GD? Fairly light ground, some sprayed off OSR stubble, some linseed stubble.

I had planned on drilling into the rape stubble on the green, but my spray man misunderstood the plan and sprayed them off a couple of weeks ago.

If it is freer draining land you may have noproblems
if early November is normal cut off then 2 weeks earlier aplies
but do not drill if it is too wet trust your judgement if you think it is pushing it too much then you are probley too wet
so don’t push on just because the drill still works

here we are on heavy clay with silt at400ft cold and usually catch rain when many places stay dry

too wet for notill now but drilled up
my aim is drilled up in September

Sell it and use the money to buy a tine drill 😉 sorry couldn’t resist. I’ve heard of people going too fast with the gd and the slanty angle flicks the seed out of the slot?
Yes seed flicked out slots all over the top. Fan turned right down to stop it bouncing out slots to. Happy with what I’ve done this afternoon but two fields I did this morning are a bit pants even for my standards

Think speed must be the issue, fan speed shouldn’t be a problem as the air bleeds stop the beans being powered into the slot.
Tan my 6m at 5300 rpm @ 300 kg/ha and didn’t get a seed on the top at 6kph

New or near new discs 15 inches plus help as the slot is wider
it is the disc that flicks the beans out
on the previous big disc before air bleed the bean May have been pushed into the slot
I have not notices bigger seeded crops bouncing out when riding on the coulter bar and watching the seed inthe slot

slow speed helps a lot and plenty of weight especially in hard conditions ( spring )
5 to 6 k maximum the extra weight on the slowing wheels can help but in wet place they sink in
usually too wet and should have packed up till dryer
full hopper on a 9 m caddy 10 tonne plus tool bar and coulter weight although with the transport wheels of the ground there is some weight on the tractor which is needed in moist conditions on and up slope

I find the biggest issue is speed, followed by the wet soil as @tr250 says above.
But blocked tubes also as the beans can jam, I always insist the seed cleaners dump the biggest beans in the waste, that helps a lot.
Not sure scrapers make much difference, I find it's keeping the discs shimmed properly so they touch keeps it cleaner.
I tried drilling on some frost's a couple years ago, didn't really work as the soil underneath was sticky as anything, it spread nearly as much seed on top as underground.

The osr volunteers were knee high at drilling time.

Still can't quite believe it.

Wasn't brave enough not to pellet though.
Got mega populations here in every scenario.
Wet summer and Romney marsh equals lots of slugs
