Ssangyong musso

I'm a bit sad and hadn't realised they were quite so small. Definitely, the new Rexton would have been in the running for us next time round and possibly even the Musso.

I remember going to the Motorshow when I was a lot younger with my dad and seeing these weirdly named and somewhat ungainly vehicles as they were back then.

It ain't over until the fat lady sings. More information and certainty, one way or another, should be available in two or three months, or certainly by the end of the year.
I just thought that people who were in the market should be buying with their eyes wide open about the potential prospects for this company.

Were they not Mercedes Licenced engines and transmissions which would not accept genuine Merc parts if repairs were needed ...?
I had a Korando & a Musso pickup & lots of the parts had genuine Mercedes numbers on them. I used some bits from a friend's Mercedes saloon to repair mine & according to the forums just about all the Merc engine bits were interchangeable.

In my dealings with a local machining company I found that the "bombproof" Merc sprinter engine was the exact opposite - every visit they'd say " Ah yes they all did that!" & reach off a shelf for a go/ no go guage or something else they had made for Sprinters!

The only troubles I had with mine were the Merc bits - all the Korean/whatever stuff was fine apart from a handbrake which was OK facing downhill but awful facing uphill. I did have the Borg Warner T5 gearbox (also fitted to the Ford Mustang, TVR Tuscan & Sierra Cosworth with a couple of lower ratios changed!!) lose fifth, but that was only a 50p circlip to replace at the back of the box.
I think the Mercedes "quality " tag had long gone by this era - I had two friends who had nothing but trouble with their saloons, another with the black death on his Jeep (later Sprinter engine) & a neighbour who spent about £6000 trying to get his wife's sports running properly...

Well, I have just bought a Musso 'Rebel'. Having the Decal's removed. They are not needed! I tried one both towing and as normal and liked it. I may, or may not, say how I get on after a year or 2.
My old Isuzu is on its last legs and would be expensive to fix so took the plunge!!

Had a closer look at new and newish Mussos. Could anyone confirm whether there's a significant discount off the listed prices as the ones I've seen are far too closely priced to e.g. the closest equivalent spec Ford Ranger?

Had a look at some pre-reg ones outside a dealer the other day and the sticker price was 'optimistic' to say the least. However, the silage contractor I use had a discounted price last Autumn and it was a significant discount. I just can't remember the figure though. The sticker prices assume that there will be a part exchange and that they can then quote a very attractive [read 'unrealistic'] price for that.

There is a 10% discount for 'field and country!' on new Musso's and I believe for some reason there is a bit on the Rebel as I got my Rebel cheaper than the bog standard 'EX'. Northridge finance is also very competitive as I checked it with a very good finance guy, I and some friends use sometimes.

How are you getting on with youir Musso now, a few months down the line.

Looking at a Ranger replacement and there are some keenly priced pre reg Musso pickups about. £19K +VAT... This has pulled the low miler 2nd hand prices back a bit too. Not enough dealer representation about really for my liking, notwithstanding the issues for Ssangyong back home in Korea!

I’m in that club. I reckon I’ll be able to get a good spec’ Rexton say 18-24 months old with no more than 12-15k miles for around £20k or less in a couple of years with remaining warranty too!

here you go..... :)

I’ve just googled them and you are correct. They need new funding to pay off and or service debts. They claim a big issue is brand identity which I can understand. Maybe a new better named owner will afford them some much needed street credibility. We need manufacturers like them to keep the bigger boys honest

They should take a leaf out of some of the other Korean manufacturers, and change their name to appeal to a Western Market.

The original 4x4 Musso was available with the (genuine) Merc E Class 3.2L petrol straight 6, with the T5 box and badged as a ‘GX220’, they handled surprisingly well and had an awesome kick down.
I have vivid memories of borrowing my dads to marshall on a tarmac rally, and power sliding all 2 tonnes of it through the corners in a very controllable 4 wheel drift... 🤫

Called at a Dealer in Wem on the way through the town, and looked at a Musso pickup. They were rather pricey compared to some prices I have seen on Autotrader, but nice spec.... however, that is not much use to me in afarm truck!

Not really an off-roader was my decision. Ground clearance was not that good and the cat (expensive!!) was sitting below the level of the chassis rails, waiting to be knocked off when in a rut. No underbody protection at all.. The Front valance looked equally vulnerable. Fine as a cheap tow truck as they will handle 3.5t... legally.

Yes, My Rebel did not go back to the dealers until its first service. Everything ok at that date. A few weeks later I had flashing lights on the dash and after some research at the dealers they found my Tyre fitting company had fitted the spare wheel the wrong way up and it had damaged a modem by rubbing on it. Otherwise I have no complaints. I bought it because I thought it would be reliable towing to the summer shows, so it was probably me that caused all the cancellations!!! We show Pedigree Lincoln Red Cattle.

My 20 year old Musso 2.9TD sailed through its CT (French MOT) today with no advisories.
When I first saw and test drove one in 1996 I thought “Cheap old Korean crap; it will be rusted out in 4 years.” How wrong I was! Certainly outlasted my Troopers.
Yes, they are a bit odd, but truly reliable.

Was told they are light on the back end with no weight in, has anyone found that ? Looked at one before buying our dmax a couple of years ago,
