Had a very informative day with Michelin Tyres this week and there was much discussion about on tractor Tyre inflation systems.
Are they becoming more common?
Would you run them on your machines?

It seems that Fendt are the only manufacturer to offer the system as a factory fit option, everyone else is retro fit, best option seems to be the CITS (Central Tyre Inflation System) supplied from Tractair.
These systems were on the New Hollands that were on the the event and I've seen the same on a New John Deere that was dealer fitted from new.

We have this system on one of our Unimogs. It has a demount sprayer on its back. It is a factory fitted option, front and rear tyre pressures are independently altered by in Cab controls. The difference when travelling in field is unbelievable even on its 24" tyres. You can visibly see the difference in the tyre marks on the ground.

Do you alter the pressures as the weight decreases during spraying or just re- inflate to go back on the road?

Tyre inflation systems is the way to go, its the next to have item now that everyone has gps, i think it will become more available over the next year or so and possibly standard in 10 years.

Funnily enough, I’ve just got home from a local engineers, we’ve been having a look at adapting the system that is on my Zetros. It was supposed to come from Germany all working but it doesn’t and nobody seems to have any knowledge of the system. Teleflow in France are helpful but all they can say is that I have to remove the entire system from the truck and send it to them. I can assure you that is a big job and may disable the machine for who knows how long?

Therefore, today we’ve been having a look to see if we can adapt it to a manual system from the electronic digital system. We’re lucky in that Mercedes route the air through the axle, which makes things easy, and all the major pipe work is in place also including reservoir tanks.

We will convert the wheel valves so they can let air through both ways (they are very intricate and it took us over an hour just to see how they work) and they will include a small ball valve to switch the system off completely to each wheel, making it very safe on the road.

The pipe work will be routed through two manual regulators mounted externally near the cab door. I’ll turn the ball valves when I get off road and then set the regulators to the pressure I need for the job.

By the time I’ve got my first load on the pressure will be correct for spreading. Once finished, I’ll adjust to the road pressure and by the time I’ve got the trailer hooked up it’ll be right and I can then turn the individual wheel ball valves off, making each wheel independent and safe.

I’m hoping to do it for hundreds rather than thousands.

Might be worth a chat with the guys at Tractair if you haven’t already.

JD are offering it on the 8r and will be filtered down to the 7 and 6 ranges within the next 18-24 months so I was told. MF are trialing a system too
