The family farm

If you inherited the family farm and you worked it for a lifetime and were getting on a bit fitness wise with no family help ( not interested) would it be a bad thing to sell what’s been in your family 250 years . Because maybe the guilt afterwards is worse than working alone and living alone now the children just come back for holidays really . Just wondering if anyone on here has done it and felt it was the right thing then regretted it. Also my guilt would not just extend to the land and the ancestors. I have made it a safe haven for waders and many species of flora and fauna . I would hate to think of someone developing where the lapwing nest. What to do as I couldn’t stay here without livestock to keep me moving but on the other hand it’s not an ideal place to stay at the back of beyond on your own

Rent it back out to somebody? Then you can have a regular income, farm sale of all your stock and fixtures and fittings would pay off all your debts and possibly buy you a house, you can put in terms and conditions certain things are too be left alone/ how you want them… and you retain your ownership…

It will probs be sold when your gone so what's the point in killing yourself if no one wants it , we are just a blip in time in the scheme of things

As above, if you cling onto it till the bitter end, someone else will just sell it and enjoy the money anyways.

Share farming or something similar?? Plenty of young keen people out there that need a step up, and you keep your hand in an pass on a lifetimes knowledge of your land!!

It wouldn’t be an easy thing to do but guilty might be a strong word, if you’ve got no family that want it then your choices are limited!! Don’t leave it to charity whatever you do, they’ll just sell it an go on holiday!! Find a proper hard working couple an come to some arrangement, they’ll be more great full than they can put into words an you won’t feel guilty, good luck!!

As mostly a tenant I’ll never be in that position. If I was the share farming idea would be quite appealing

Sorry for my mistake , but I may be in your situation in a few years and no I will not feel guilty nor should I and anyone who makes you feel like that is not worth the time of day

a couple farms that were second generation on the farm have not long sold up near here and they seem happy enough.

sell up and don’t feel guilty . If you let it or share farm it, what happens when you really NEED to move somewhere nearer amenities . 250 years is nothing in the grand scheme of things .

If you like the location and lifestyle look at share farming or renting it out? Equally, if you can't bear to see things you've done be destroyed or changed, and get a real enjoyment from those things, again, share or rent. However, if you're not fussed and could quite happily live elsewhere, and there's definitely no joy to be had from passing on to the next generation, sell up and reap the £ benefits. Don't feel guilty, who's to say what'll happen after you pass on, in which case your guilt is futile. Plenty to weigh up. It seems like one of those things that after a spell of consideration you'll 'know' the right answer.

Different story if you were insolvent. Then your entitled to feel guilty. But given your family situation, I agree. No guilt on your behalf.
Can you put a covenant on the land that certain areas cant be developed?? It can be done here...

I can appreciate you not wanting to see all you've built go.
But you could surely find other good works to throw yourself into to leave a legacy, without the 24/7 ties of your croft.
