Despite 30 years of accounts packages and software clever dicks, the only universal standard invoice format is a piece of paper. All the electronic versions are merely graphical bit maps, very few being numerically usable as direct input to a software package so why should we waste much time on electronic versions. They are nobody better than the representation on paper and much easily lost or rendered inaccessible by obsolescence of equipment or software.
Paper invoices aren’t standard, don’t kid yourself.
As for thinking that a sheet of paper is better to input to a software package than an emailed request - you really have lost it there.

Paper is just hassle and pointless these days , posting invoices costs a stamp, paper and extra time faffing around , HMRC don't require it so why would you ? I get 10-20 invoices a week coming in around 5% come in paper form and that's only when they are posted with the product I`ve ordered.

The problem is though that every supplier I know produces a different electronic format of invoice so they end up being scanned or simply output as a pdf. A pdf is of no use whatsoever to quickbooks etc as it’s a bitmap not an alpha numerical file.
Until the whole world use the same always ha numerical file format for invoices which would be possible, then there isn’t much point in moving over to electronic invoices because there isn’t a universally recognised standard.

Plenty of pdf files are alpha numerical - sounds like you need to find a different pdf “printer”.

I wrote my own VAT accounts package in 1985 on an Amstrad CPC6128. All saved on those dinky 3” non standard discs that A Sugar bought as a cheap job lot. Try retrieving any of that now. Not a chance. Good job I printed it out. Within a decade pdf will probably be as dead as corduroy and about as readable as those 3” discs.
Truth is on paper I can go back to 1876 here.

You can’t compare hardware and software obsolescence. If you’d stuck your data in the cloud or on something readable then it would likely still be accessible.
Are they? I’m out of touch. But we get everything from directly compatible accounts package generated invoices to stuff that’s been scribbled on paper and scanned in at the other end.
And all you need to do is drop the files into your accounts package/ webmail service and it’s there for as long as you will be.

Not so , what do you want to do with the invoice other than check its correct and store it? book keeper reads it and puts it on the system , simples , no paper required .

Why would anyone want to waste paper and ink and other tangible planetary resources on asking for payment? You’re obviously on the internet, so surely an emailed request for payment is adequate?
I don’t pay the bills
Not that that makes any real difference as I don’t understand any of this techno bollox refered to above.
Paper bulls are cheap and simple, no need for lap tops, broadband printers etc,

There has been an increasing driver shortage for at least 5-10 years Europe wide. Haulge companies should have been sorting things out to get more UK drivers trained especially once brexit happend. Other things such as new legislation coupled with stuff like foreign drivers leaving and covid has meant there isn’t enough UK based drivers.
There is undoubtedly a lot of poor employers who have used cheap European labour and there is also massive lack of infrastructure in many destinations and they are also taking the pee using lorries as storage which drives people away.
if I took seriously every story a lorry driver had told me the agricultural industry in my part of the world would look very different to what it does!
I’m in no doubt your correct.

Totally agree with all comments on here about potential major Insurance problem if you let drivers load themselves and something goes wrong. Insurers could potentially be within their rights to try and wriggle plus farm owner/Manager could also face action from HSE. It is not worth the risk in my opinion.

If they behave like arseholes yes I do , if they behave like normal people I treat them very well.
We've had it with feed deliveries, most of them are great and appreciate it when we jump in and sweep them out, providing they have been decent with us. One however just completely lost his rag because the load wouldn't come off as he had loaded it on to a damp floor. Blamed our shed for not being high enough etc etc. Even when he went outside and tipped the whole way the load wouldn't shift. All because he couldn't wait half hour other end for floor to dry.
