Hi all

Noticed quite a few people have questions about the newer McCormick Tractors as they're gaining market share.

If you'd like to know anything about them then please just ask and I'll do my best to answer. Please don't ask for prices as that's a job for your local dealer! Also please keep questions limited to the current X range of Tractors as I have little experience of the older models.

I have a question. Why would/should i buy one when most other manufacturers JD, CNH, MF, Fendt, Valtra have a decent range of tractors at the moment?

Like the mainstream brands they also have a good product offering, there have been gaps but they're being filled. Unlike the big boys which can partially trade off of their name and appeal Mccormick aren't in that position (yet). Therefore their products have to be capable, reliable and great to use, and they can't be released with known faults and issues. We all know mainstream brands which are associated with a particular issue but people buy them anyway because it's an X or a Y and it's "cool". If Mccormick did this they'd be screwed. We've yet to have a range and be able attribute a common fault to it.

Also almost all of the dealers are independents like ourselves. They'll go out of their way to help and not forget about you the moment you leave the dealership (I'm not saying all big franchise dealerships are like this but hear a lot of people grumble about some). You can also normally talk to the man or woman who's name is above the door.

I admit we have to fight tooth and nail to get most people to even sit in the seat but those that do are on the whole very impressed and once the first one is sold they then seem to stick with them.

And at the end of the day competition to stop the big boys getting complacent can only be a good thing surely?

@Chae1 good question, I was wondering the same, what makes a McCormick stand out from the rest? Last time I got a price they definitely weren’t cheap enough compared to main brands to consider
😅 I know what you're saying but if they were considerably cheaper people would decide they must be made with lesser parts or to a lesser standard and avoid them for that reason. The new products really are up there quality wise with the big boys. Don't get me wrong there's the odd issue but show me the perfect tractor, car etc!

Also every model is now made in the same factory in Italy. No smaller ranges being built in Turkey, China etc so no cheap labour rates for assembly.

Though they have looked closely at pricing with the new tier v models compared to the competition to try and help 👍

Good luck. I don't envy you trying to break into the market.

I see we now have a dealer in Aberdeenshire again.

A friend bought a new Discovery and got a lot of bother with it.
He went to the top of the dealership complaining about it, and they told him he knew, when buying it, that they weren't reliable. Told him if he wanted reliability, he should have bought a Landcruiser.
Same with tractors, people buy them, knowing their faults.

Are you actually fupping serious? They needed a fortnight old cow cleaning spooned through their letterbox..

Once I was about to buy a Same Laser 160, a low-spec special edition that would avoid looking for a suitable used by spending little more money, in addition to serving me perfectly for what I wanted. A friend, who is an independent mechanic, told me that a good used JD is better for replacement, resale price, experience in repairs ... etc. I followed his advice and have no regrets.

There are some phrases in the Spanish language that say:
The experiments are done with soda, you don't play things with eating, and the known bad is better than the good to know (if that were the case).

Today, on the subject of tractors, there are 5 brands of engines and another 4-5 brands of transmissions. Almost all brands are not tractor manufacturers, they are component assemblers and only make the bodywork and bonnet stickers. It must be said that all tractors plow, carry trailers and are used for a farm. I repeat the experiments are done with soda

They need to be cheaper than the big boys to offset as resale will be less. Nice tractor imho
Yes I won't dispute that. When I've done examples with people the depreciation % has generally been very similar to the main brands. Yes the resale has been less but the purchase price was lower so its generally equaled out.

They've often been accused of being expensive, and a few models were, but normally when the specs have been matched they've been competitive against the premium brands or similar to NH, MF ect. On the whole Mccormicks have a good base spec.

Iv been told by a mechanic that works on them that the smaller x 6 series has a soft backend and to avoid but that the x7 zf backend is real good. Thoughts?

X6 is definitely lighter back end but we haven't had any issues with back ends and it's the model we've sold the most of. Not saying others haven't had issues. Did a few pto packs in early ones but they've modified that now.

However new X6 range out soon is a bigger CAT 3 back end rather than current CAT 2 so perhaps there was an issue. Also hp of X6 range increasing to 155hp with a proper powershift transmission to better compete with rivals.

X7 backend is beefy. Replaced a clutch pack on one which had been abused on a forage wagon at 7000hrs but that's it.

When you say that once someone has bought one they usually stick with them, a large part of that could be the resale value, and the only decent deal where the depreciation isn’t huge is to swap for another McCormick?
