Grain Trailer Axles

Hello, looking for a rough idea as to how much it would cost to remove the rocking beam axles from our grain trailer and fit commercial axles and springs etc, apat from the worn out running gear the trailer is in good condition and would have to spend a fair amount for a second hand trailer of the same spec. Thanks

If your fitting commercial axles would used not be good enough? There easy enough to service up like new

Possibly, but thought buying new would keep things simple
If you're going to do the job, do it properly. How big is the trailer? Get axles, brakes & spring sets which are designed for the likely loads ..... Oversize ones may seem like a good idea, but will cause trouble in years to come. That 2nd-hand Low-Loader spring set will be so highly-rated, it won't have b*gger all spring deflection between unladen & fully-laden when on your trailer. Without sufficient spring deflection you won't get good control of your Load Sensing Valve (you'll need one if you're getting decent brakes) & you've get over-braking & wheel locking during unladen braking.
Size the axles, brakes & springs to suit the likely axle loads & the speed you're likely to be travelling at ...... Actual speed, not 'official' speed ;)

Get just over 12 ton of wheat on so not a massive load, at 55k on private roads 😉.

12 tonne (payload) trailer, tandem axle(?) is going to have an axle load of approx. 7000 kg ..... But check the values on the manufacturer's plate to be sure .... they'll be stated there. Normal 420 x 180 mm 'commercial' brakes will be too big for this size of trailer ..... they won't work hard enough & will glaze up. Best option is probably 406 x 120 mm, but still with 'S'-type operating cams (like the larger commercial axles) for good brake control.

What size of tyres are you going to fit? Are you likely to fit wider (and taller) flotations in the future? If so, allow for that now.

Best Bet: As Quattro has said, get in touch with ADR UK / Tyremart Agricultural at Long Bennington. Tell them what you want to do (how fast, what tyres), send the data from your trailer's plate & they'll be able to calculate & recommend the right axle, brake & suspension setup and supply it as a complete unit to be welded onto your chassis. It won't be cheap, but it will be a pukka, verified solution avoiding all the potential pitfalls ........ which may be handy next time you're travelling at ~55k ;)

We have changed the axles on lots of silage trailer now & a 420-180 brake is not to big for a 12 ton trailer , it is all we fit & they work great with load sensing on air if they are set up right, would not waste my time with Tyremart they are to expensive , buy direct direct from Granning for the axles & springs , you want a 10 ton mono leaf spring set on a tandem trailer , if you want to keep it low have an under slung spring set

Used to be able to pick a cheap artic trailer and just chop the running gear off, then weigh the rest in. A lot of the modern ones are on air suspension now though so it becomes more complicated.
