I like the idea of outside corrals as stock will be healthier but with the winter we are having I'm glad all mine have a roof over their heads

A cheap way of making big open yards like that is to use lorry flats. The flatbeds that bolt down onto the skelly trailers. Turn them on their side and hold them up with a few rsj's. Only need a few to make a decent size yard. If you have a feed barrier down one side they have three sides of solid walls to shelter against. Cheap and effective.

Olivers?Farmer not too far from me fattens a lot of cattle in those types of yards. When I asked him how he was keeping them dry this winter he said he just keeps putting the straw in...around 70-80 hesstons a day

I noticed sepa's rules on their web site they expect us to catch and store all run off from bedded yards like above!

We had one, it worked very well. Discontinued though, as a potentially massive issue getting rid of the "free" woodchip bedding, when it came out as muck. Would have one again, no hesitation, but not on a rented farm!

A few round here, on dairy outfits.
One discontinued (they put up a shed) because it was to wet, but I believe others still operate. No new ones being built, tho'.

Outdoor cubicles work well, just so long as you've plenty of slurry storage.

Lincolnshire's biggest feedlot. Finishes 6,000hd per year and has up to 3,000 on feed at any one time.
There was a 1,200hd feedlot in East Anglia offered on an FBT recently as well.

I'd pay good money for the popcorn just to watch someone attempt that in SW Scotland, or Cumbria....
Well macintosh does it with 3k animals in southwest Scotland.
