Suckler cows &straw

Feeding our cows straw and molasses just now as short of silage. Not something tried before. How long before they need to go back onto silage? Galloway & shorthorn cows, newly weaned & housed, calving April/May.

Like us, no end of grass in the heap or barn, none of it any good.

The south east just didn't have the year for conserving grass nicely.

We can't all be as lucky as @Hfd Cattle
... just seems that wherever I go there are large mountains of silage bales and the recent Fodder sales have struggled to get bids on it . However I do see that it's probably more regional .....

You haven't been to Essex lately though have you?

I have a mountain of big square bales of 'hay' stood outside, sadly they are too wet to burn.

Extra protein wouldn't do any harm. Urea added to the molasses or mineral blocks containing urea. A reputable feed merchant or nutritionist would be able to help.

In fact, such a diet could form the basis of a complete winter diet.

Ours stay on straw until we run out and then onto silage/hay whatever I’ve got, ours are outside mooching about aswell though, beef shorthorns!! If yours are on molasses an mineral then should be alright as long as condition holds up! Give’em the silage closer to calving 👍
