BAKEWELL MARKET

Monday 15th November

707 Cattle and 1,809 Sheep on offer this week with an outstanding trade throughout the market with results exceeding expectations.

The entry of 409 Store & Breeding Cattle included the Annual Consignment of in-calf Limousin Heifers from JW & RG Ede of Youlgreave. These animals attracted a great deal of interest selling to £1,900 with 13 making over £1,500. A Charolais Stock Bull from Simon Frost realised £2,700.

Although the general store cattle lacked of the top quality that we have seen in recent weeks Steers still topped at £1,500, Heifers £1,260 and Feeding Bulls £1,020. Cows and Calves peaked at £1,600.

The excitement in the store ring is certainly driven in part by the trade for Finished Cattle. There were 129 on offer with top prices 322p and £2,086. The 53 Heifers averaged a remarkable 236.0p

There was a decent turnout of 127 OTM and Feeding Cows with a very respectable trade. Top figures 216p and £1,701, with the average at 139.1p.

A few less calves about this week with just 42 on offer, bulls reached a useful £415 with Heifers £270.

In the Sheep department prices continue to rise. The 1,256 lambs sold to top figures of 320p and £165.12.

The SQQ average emerged at a healthy 276.5p.

In the Cull Sheep section there were 552 on offer with Ewes to £163 to average £88.56.

They sell all kinds Tesco under their other name of “Booker” complete barstewards stuffing the catering trade full of foreign meats .
My MIL used to be a bookers manager for 15 or so years but left just before Tesco got involved, going in to visit her you’d see a big slab of beef on the counter with UK slaughter house stamps on the meat yet the label said “Produce of Botswana” 😮
