I took a load of logs to a customer this evening, who has mice chewing cables in the engine compartment of his 21 reg Hybrid Volvo, which is used nearly every day.
I was quite amazed when he told me the above.Has anyone heard of such a thing happening on a new vehicle, any suggestions what to do about it?

Yes, its a new thing. I was told manufactures have used stuff in the cables/ insulation/coverings that attract vermin and other animals. Someone on face book had a 3 days old brand new Man TGE van and something chewed all the exhaust nox sensor wiring off. they think it was fox 🤷‍♂️ it wasn't just nibbled there was chucks off it ripped out and chewed up on the floor!

VW now sell a plug in 12volt deterrent i think!

It happened during the summer here with the mouse plage. We had a brand new car in 2009 get chewed out cost 2k to get fixed (also had the GPS unit cables on our new tractor this time) We baited our sheds but the bugger's dragged the rat blocks into the engines of the cars. We just started parking them outside from then on and we didn't have any issues. Someone said to me they made the new coatings out of soya and that is why they eat the wires.

We have a customer who works for Audi and they have the same problem, the wire coating is protein based, brand new cars getting eaten!
We had mice eat a turbo pipe on our car, twice! we have caught over 25 mice in the garden this autumn

Yep, my uncle had same trouble with his Hyundai ix35 or whatever it is, mice chewed through a wire to the pressure sensor and it lost all its boost, was only about 3 months old at the time.
We replaced that bit of wiring with something out of an old cabinet drier, IIRC, and my sister is still driving it with no further troubles

New Honda quad had the gearbox sensor wiring chewed off at a week old. Dealer said half an inch closer to the casing and they would have had to spilt the engine. Mothers car wasn't being used over lockdown and squirrels packed the engine bay with acorns and chewed through a load of wires. Insurance covered it but if had needed the whole loom replaced it would have been a write-off

Yes... 1 year old Disco 4.... random lights came on one day. Drove it to main dealer.... £2500 later they replaced wires chewed by rats. I put it down to the farm the previous day that had lots of rats running around the yard

Managers new BMW had wiring in engine bay chewed, they're using soya in the process of coating the wires that the mice love. His dealer has done 4 cars so far

I've bought cans of rodent deterrent spray for the combine, as it already feels like a high rodent year. Whether they work I cannot say but they cannot do any harm and I feel like I am doing my best!

I expect like the issues when they went to leadless solder, sooner or later they will work out how to make growable cable insulation that doesn't get eaten. It is amazing all the new ways they manage to come up with these days to make existing products unreliable.
