Like i said, I DON T AGREE. I'm merely creating debate, After all this is a discussion forum. I also said. They need to be very harsh to justfy the merit of their own scheme. If they appear soft then their own scheme lacks the credit they think it has.
Works both ways though Rob. They also need to act professionally. I need to speak to them on Monday as they haven’t been loading on TFF member points.

it will be an admin issue, so minor and happens every few years. But if they want zero tolerance, it works both ways.

If they banned a farmer incorrectly (mistakes happen) they would be opening themselves up to a massive lawsuit. I would suggest a softer approach would be more applicable.

I’ll find out on Monday what mistake I’ve made

Been working my way through courses on Ei operator website today. Potentially 8 points on offer. Should scrape me over the finishing line but what a pallaver.
Really it’s all the sort of stuff I’d look up if I needed it. I don’t keep the maximum application rate of carbetamide at the front of my mind but if I was using it I’d look it up or more likely my agronomist would tell me what to put on. I do feel they are padding these courses out to justify the points but it did refresh my mind on one off two things so mustn’t grumble …. too much.

I think nroso have run out of stuff to do to run courses. There’s only so much can be said about nozzle selection etc etc etc……

i only ever done one course and decided it was a waste of time so nowadays just get whatever I need by doing online stuff sprayer test and bits like that.

looks like I’m slowly losing though as my 3 yearly point carry over is dropping ever time.

They seem to like the element of control/power, yet are bored by having to keep coming up with stuff.

Madness!

The tests at the end of the lessons are pretty straightforward. I made a few notes as the lesson proceeded as I find writing it down helps it stick in my memory. The LERAPS lesson was the hardest as that whole area is a dogs breakfast anyway in terms of rules and legislation and it tends to be something we set up for own circumstances then forget about. I don’t have watercourses greater than 6m wide so I’m not that interested in what rules apply to them for example. Ei operator has provided a good resource within the system they work in. It was fairly clear and easy to get to grips with and without it I wouldn’t have had enough points by January to stay in the scheme.

The thing I find about a lot of this training for example on LERAPS is that it presents a multitude of confusing options and bumf to read through, some of which will apply to your situation. Riddling out the good grain from the chaff is the problem.
A simple operator like myself really needs to be guided to a practical pragmatic way forward. But instead we go home and end up having to work it out for ourselves anyway and the critical weakness in the system is that nobody actually helps you with this or checks you have got it right until some inspector arrives and pulls you up on it.
So over the years I have learned that if it’s LERAPS A or B I just shutoff 6 m alongside the watercourse unless the label advises a bigger buffer zone. Read the label carefully.
If really pushed in LERAPS B I could put on 1/4 dose in the 6m next to watercourse or use 3* nozzles in the 6m section, operating them at a low enough pressure to achieve that 3* rating but it needs a recalculation of speeds and volumes used and another circuit of the headland doing just 6m so it’s hardly a practical proposition.
We used to have 6m grass margins of course but then that became a bit iffy on the legal / contractual side with DEFRA.
Never easy is it?

I am at the end of my 3 year cycle for Nroso. What with one thing and another I have not managed to do as many training events as usual and ended up with 29 points. Saw this on my statement and coincidentally my local NIAB conference was last week so I popped along and signed the BASIS and Nroso paperwork. I have no doubt that my attendance is recorded and the paperwork is on its way to Nroso. However yesterday I received an email from them saying that I was suspended and if I haven't achieved the points by the end of the first week in January I would not be able to re-join the scheme for 12 months.

I confess I had a bit of a paddy on the phone, I am not the biggest (or smallest) farm but I am the only one here who has all the licences to spray, actually too many as I am BASIS qualified. If I was to be chucked out I could not market my crops or even more critically for me feed it to my Moos. I know a contractor could be brought in but that is not the point. It is punishment that by a very long way is greater than the crime involved and as far as I can see just a way to make sure people pay money and go to the Nroso sponsored training courses. I understand why they feel we need to do CPD but it should be managed fairly and perhaps more independently. I could actually have COVID at the moment and be unable to get any points, would they show any compassion? After my call yesterday I doubt it.

With all the issues around Red Tractor and feeling particularly grumpy about the email I thought I would post this, what does the TFF massive think?

Who is the head of NRoSO ?

I known they get City & Guilds to administer it but who is the real boss ?
What is their obsession with a badge?

We know Jim Mosely is at the top of Red Tractor but who is NRoSO's boss?

They want their arse kicking, they bully instead of support with their threatening letter of suspension.

Do they realise that many farmers (especially livestock & mixed) are working outside 12 hours a day or more & have to do this extra bureaucratic work in the evenings?
It's just another stealth tax.

There probably isn't anyone. Isn't it part of the Voluntary Initiative?

Does that mean that it's part of NFU somewhere somehow?

I had another conversation today with them, didn’t really get far. Discovered when you do a course it can take 30 days to show on your record. Which is a bit daft when I have been given 45 days to gain my 1 point. The solution is to screenshot the results from the eio operator course I did and email it to nroso, apparently eio is nothing to do with nroso and it’s not their fault it takes so long.

I did say again that i felt the 12 month exclusion for not getting the points was extremely excessive and totally unfair.

Surely this can’t be an acceptable state of affairs. Some of these schemes need a good looking at to make sure help is in place rather than just punishment.
There needs to something like a traffic light scoring system. As I have said before our pub got a hygiene rating 1 out of 5, (not that I noticed anything amiss) but was still allowed to carry on trading. You don’t become a dangerous operator just because you haven’t sat through a refresher course. Wake up NFU and get a grip or we will carry on losing good operators for no good reason.

Really a traffic light system needs to reflect right through RT. Green full approval, amber, a non critical failure like not enough NRoSO points. Red, suspended, two foot of pigeon sh!t on your grain heap. The traffic light status would show on your online RT membership status. If it’s amber your merchant can ring you to find out what’s amiss and make his own mind up.
Very few other industries would stop you trading over such minor discrepancies or bar you for 12 months before an appeal to a tribunal etc.
This has to be sorted out.
