I do worry about a thick layer of mulch sticking around and causing more problems with topping

What terms have you put to the sheep men out of interest?
Not much only one field we are trialling which is 27acres
Been very open, been very willing to work with them on it tbh just a lot of grass about this year and a few people already grazing cover crops so not to much interest.
Not quite big enough block for the travel for me or id of been interested, your about an hour away sadly

Drill limitations with a lot of dead matter on top...
In our experience if done on a frost the rolls ride over the tillage radish which sticks out the ground a bit so you do not get a lot of the stalks broken. This then caused us issues with a mounted sabre tine drill we used at the time. The best solution was a topper to get rid of the haulm and then the sabre tine flowed through the reddish roots lifting them to the surface where they then rotted.

You should've used crops that frost kill like I said when you asked me what to drill in the summer

If you roll it the rows going the same directing as youll ploughing will turn under ok but going against it will push into piles. I’d hit it with the topper twice going directly against the wheeling.
This was a oil radish/oat/phacelia mix that a rolled with a Cambridge roll last January. Photo above 5 weeks later. IMO it does a good job if the conditions are good (-5) and a few more frosts after the rolling. Just used a low dose of glyphosate before drilling just to get the last few bits out!
