What are calf prices doing at the moment? All the market reports shout about the top prices, very few showing averages or the spread of prices. Would be great if people could share more accurate prices on here, everything from jersey bulls to monster big blues!
Leek reports are pretty good for calves. Bakewell's on the other hand aren't worth the paper they are written on!
Leek this week:
CALVES (90);
Selling time – 10:00am
Auctioneer – Oliver Hiles (07801 530899)

Just a few less about which is understandable with the weather over the weekend.

28 Continental Bulls
All shapes and sizes and well bid for but the changeable weather makes rearing calves a hard job. A super Bule from the Handford family, Birch Vale sold at £440 with other better sorts topping £300.
18 Blues av £264 to £440 – JW Handford & Sons
5 Sims av £235 to £285 – S & M Huxley & Son
4 Lims av £276 to £330 – F E Whittaker & Sons

22 Continental Heifers
Stronger money than the bulls with additional buyers at the ringside. A trio of best topped £270 with Blues & Charolais’ at £275.
14 Blues av £216 to £275 – W G Brown & Sons
4 Sims av £90 to £110 – D S Harrison
2 Lims av £109 to £168 – K W Twemlow & Co
1 Char to £275 – F J Gould & Son

30 Natives
Similar to last weeks strong price.
2 Here Bulls av £165 to £185 – F J Gould & Son
9 AA Bulls av £152 to £265 – C Heath & Sons
3 Here Heifers av £79 to £160 – T Swinson & Ptns
15 AA Heifers av £94 to £190 – AJ & T Myatt
1 Beef Shorthorn Heifer to £215 – WG Brown & Sons

11 Black & White Bulls
Better sorts £50 – £70 with smaller sorts £28 – £50.

There's a table of average prices for calves by class (and all classes of stock) in the back of the Farmers Guardian every week. AHDB may also have this information online.

Thanks. It's good to get it from other farmers perspectives though of what people have sold for/payed for calves, and to get more of an idea of the actual types of calves including age, breed, conformation etc.

Have a look at Barbers @ Market Drayton. They show each breed, numbers forward, top prices and averages. What the auctioneer writes is pretty accurate too

Currently I’m paying;
£180 Hereford Bulls
£160 Hereford heifers

£200 AA Bulls
£140 AA heifers
£180 BB heifers.

All reared by two local dairies to c.25-40 days and bought directly off farm. Minimal stress involved.
I’m sure you can buy cheaper but a few deaths soon wipe the gain of cheap calves away. You can definitely buy more expensive!

Would rather have it that way some of these other auctioneers make selling 200 cattle last half a day
There’s plenty of auctioneers can sell as many an hour and can be understood perfectly well. I mean talking slower not selling slower. Stephen Aitken could push 90 cows an hour through Darlington and I could always hear him clearly, and he was Scottish. He was some auctioneer.

You won’t buy any cheaper than that if they are decent bred calves!! Not much worth having in the blue heifers below £200. You MIGHT save £30/40 on Angus bulls but too be honest a good Angus bull is over £200 all day long.

I saw some jersey bulls in Drayton the other week, god they were crap. £35-£40 each! 😳 I wouldn’t have given you the price of a cartridge for them! It was a farmer buying them so god knows what the idea is? Killing buyers were bidding £10-20

It would be a fair ish reflection of calf prices at market drayton, whitland, shrewsbury etc. What would they be making near you?
Not sold nothing for two weeks so thing might of changed a bit but reading the report it doesn't sound like it.... May be 2rd quality dropped a bit.....i would say best and average extra 50 60 pound on top what you said. They are cheaper tho compared to late summer

Lamb trade on fire today in St Asaph today ! 🔥🔥 Best trade I've ever had!
Nearly broke the £3/kg milestone with first bunch and the £150 milestone with some really ugly old 56. 5kg things !!
How high can they go again? 😬
The beef cattle had a lot top quality stuff there, no dairy x there I would guess

lambs look some trade in kirkby tonight🔥
I was there for most of the sale apart from a sociable hour in the cafe. Better than sitting in the dark at home. Good crack with a lot of people with the same idea.

Trade seemed to get stronger as the sale went on. Anything with meat and size was a great trade didn't seem to matter to much what they looked like! I was well pleased to average £157 for 51kgs Beltex crosses (who says Beltex crosses stall at 35kgs😁). However when similar weight mules are between£130 and £140 I suspect they're probably having a better do this year. Prices would be up at least£10 on the week
