What's going on?

I have a feeling that staffing is going to be every farmers undoing, apart from a very small percentage the young one's coming through just don't 'have it in them' anymore. And money won't fix this problem.

I do wonder at the agri colleges with their push to get their students better jobs with the agri-service providers, as who are they planning to provide a service too when their aren't enough farms left?

People packing in when they get a clear TB test around here . As well as staff and all the other issues mentioned .

One of your Shropshire dairy engineers is losing 12 farms each over 500 cows in the New Year. Apparently, some are affected by HS2 but not all

Hopefully more will go clear of TB with recent nightly on goings, TB breakdowns are bad enough anyway but being forced to carry on milking purely because you are shut down must be horrible.

I don't have the stocks sales in my exit strategy. Don't have TB but its all around us.

It's a bloody sad state of affairs. The problem with scale is that it magnifies your problems when they arise. Think of the fertiliser requirements for a typical 500 head herd. A bill like that would wind my neck in I can tell you. Ok for the guys who only buy a load or two a year but multiple artic loads of N to make grass to make milk? Holy fudge.

Local guy who is well connected reckoned there are 80 farm sales lined up by one agent all scheduled to happen in this region alone in the next 2 years as TB allows or as retirement looms.

Its all relative its not like the costs increase exponentially.

No but you still have to sign the cheque and pay the money.

4 artic loads of nitrogen would work out at what now and it isn't like you can do without it because 500 cows can soon eat some grub and you really do need to have it front of them.

We are turning guys away at the moment but I'm conscious of an ageing work force so I'm going to carry an extra man to drive a tractor next year and another to do some building work(which will probably pay for itself). Then see where we are next year. Once we get a new parlor we will move to a 4 day week as well.

Cripes, if you are turning people away you must be doing something at least 65% right.

I know of one 500 cow herd for sale soon locally. Think it was an award winning one too.
Two others I know are blokes in early 50s with no one wanting to take it on and fed up of the tie, 24/7.

No all live within 5 minute drive except two relief milkers that live 15 minutes away. In the future there will be an opportunity to build our own workers accommodation in case we need to offer it.

delivered concrete panels to a farmer who has brought a second farm and putting in a new dairy parlour housing the lot increasing his milking heard to 500
