To mask up or not?

Why aren't you a virologist? Seriously.

Did you listen to the interview with Sunetra Gupta I put up. Its really interesting and she is well above any mudslinging. Well worth a listen and she is qualified.

She says to all intents and purposes it was endemic by June 2020 and everything else has just been a bubbling along. Also she says not only were lockdowns and masks ineffective she said the worst thing we have done is pretend all this stuff about NPI is cost free when the one thing we do know is that it isn't

But will it end - in my lifetime. Yesterday The Times headline below - so five years at best!!! Maybe the consultant was being a realist?!?

NHS will be plagued by Covid ‘for at least five years’

Vaccines may be needed for a decade or more, say Downing St advisers

I don't know, I'm not an expert and don't pretend to be but it's been said that these things weaken and fizzle out, or at least previous ones have.
Hopefully the new variant is a step along the way because herd immunity seems unlikely to work. A friend of mine in her 40s has just caught it for the 2nd time in 10 months and she's still suffering from long covid from the last infection, which hit her really badly.

Sarah Gilbert said many months ago that Covid was endemic and society would eventually just get used to it and any risk same as we do Flu. Not gonna be the case afraid by the looks of it.

Really? I think we've got pretty used to it now already. Deaths are very flat and have been for a long time.

The level of testing is insane really.

There is still no real option beyond it settling in the population anyway. To all intents and purposes for the vast majority vaccinated or not Covid is still a nasty cold

Oh dear.

What of it?

A breast surgeon thinks she's wrong and didn't like that she took funding from someone he didn't like politically. Have you listened to what she said? Its not that radical - the circuit breakers don't do anything - most people keep on working because they need to and they are needed to work.

I have listened, and drew my own conclusions.

Keep locking down?

Did you think the lack of recognition of prior immunity was a mistake?

A lot of water has been passed since all that. At the moment, there's a new strain around that we don't know quite enough about, and, loud Hoorahs! (in well ventilated places, ideally out of doors), there's vaccination, clear instruction about Small changes in behaviour (ie, wearing masks). We have easy to use LFTs (I don't like the swab, either, but it's less painful than other medical tests o_O ), and we are not locked down ~ yet.

Some of us want to enjoy the rest of the year whilst not putting nearest and dearest (or even strangers :nailbiting: ) at risk, so wearing a face covering, taking LFTs, making sure our vaccination status is up to date, and not behaving like stroppy little Corbyn majors is barely an inconvenience to achieve it.

I'm just astonished you still think "small changes of behaviour" are going to be the saviour. It defies logic based on what we know. Its petty tyranny.

Petty tyranny?
Dear senses, are you sure you aren't channelling Piers Corbyn!? 😁

Shutting down business? Forcing people to be masked in one shop but not another? Shutting down all forms of entertainment for months? Month after month of scare story? Debates on excluding people from society based on a vaccine?

And you think I'm a crank for opposing this!!!

Headline front page of todays Sunday Times.

Having scrolled through the comments section under the article there is a fair bit of venom with the gist that non vaccinated should be denied NHS treatment. And that non vaccinated should be excluded from society. And much enthusiasm for compulsory vaccination.

Doctors and nurses vent anger as unvaccinated Covid cases delay vital operations

The NHS has a backlog of 5.8 million waiting for surgery and specialists are increasingly frustrated at how the unvaccinated have left them unable to tackle it

Yes, reflecting the desire of the majority vaccinated to force their risk taking behavior onto others.
Mandatory vaccines has been all over the bbc website for days now, the news is what people want to read/happen.
How many people are they actually treating!? Ludicrous nonsense pandering to base desires....apparently they spread typhus too

In the next few days a few people will unpick that headline and it could well be bulls**t. Also be interesting to see the numbers behind it.

Edit: It turns out its data from July (ie outdated) and now 70% of hospital admissions are fully vaxxed.
(and 80% of omnicrom cases are fully vaxxed). I'd imagine today the vast majority of people dying "with covid" would be the older double vaccinated

So its not great journalism from a once esteemed paper - its actually very misleading. Otherwise known as propaganda

You are not a crank.

Dear deities, let this be the only pandemic I ever get to be around for!

Last night to The Engine Shed to see The Charlatans. Great gig. Tim Burgess and the band in great form. Crumbs is it that long ago since the boys were on Top of the Pops. Not a full house but probably 1200 folk in the 'Shed' Not a mask in sight save for a couple of the venue staff - who were students so probably least vulnerable age group. Tickets inspected but not a Covid passport checked. Normal. But got my mask ready for a few minutes when I pop into the newsagents to collect my copy of The Times.
