When 750kg Dumpy fertiliser bags were launched my neighbour tried some.
Parked the old International tractor and Vicon spreader underneath and cut the bag.The tractor rolled slowly forward as the weight increased and most of the Kaynitro ended up on the floor.Fortunately around £120 /Tonne back then!

Accountant has been bothering me about getting my (overdue) end of year accounts in so been collating prices of fertiliser and diesel that was in store in the Spring. Gas oil went into the tank at 42.2ppl and 28.2t of Lithan had been delivered in at £183/t.

I knew there was a reason I'd been putting off going back through it.

Your accountant must be very thorough if he wants to know how much diesel is in stock!

Do you not do end of year valuations?

Mine wasn't far off, but a job to argue that one if you've just had 2000 litres delivered a few days before year end...
Never an issue 😂 even if delivered the day before .....as I have to spread all the fert that’s in store, load all the grain that’s left in store and sow all the seed that’s not sown so guaranteed all the fuel is used 👍🙈🙈🙈

My accountant never used to ask about fuel in stock at year end, but the last few years since prices have risen the figures have been requested. I guess Hmrc have brought it to accountants attention after it has been used to defer tax.

We’ve always been encouraged to keep it simple and focus on the 4-5 larger figures rather than a full blown valuation. Smaller items would be a lot more work for not significantly more accuracy.

As I understand it consistency in method is the most important thing when it comes to stock.
I think you will have trouble with your consistency this coming year endo_O;)

Is it not normal to do a proper year end stocktake?
Been doing it for years and including diesel and grain drier kero.

What do you define as “proper”?

How much is that “accuracy” worth?

Does it make a real difference if you have an extra half a tank of fuel in stock this year and carry it over to next year?

Any difference will wash out in the following year in any event.

I would suggest that a (seemingly) accurate and detailed valuation might show how thorough you are, and make them less inclined to look further.

My mother used to keep a little book in the desk, where we had to detail what we’d used every ‘farm’ postage stamp for. I always thought that, if ever the tax man were to see it, they’d give up all hope and cut their day short.😂

nothing would bugger your back quicker than carrying bags of spuds up aplank and emptying them in the pile hard work for hard men good job half ton boxes came cut out all that graft

We still do it, but don't fill the bags so full as when younger. Used to do 40 ton a day on my own, when in my 20/30's

Don't consider myself hard, just keep going steady. Can still do the same at 57.

Bought my N early for £278(smug smiley face). If its worth £600 odd at my year end in March do I have to value it at that?
If so does it means I will be taxed on the gain on a product that I am not going to sell.
How does that work?

Dont be silly.... simple answer unless you did sell it NO. & even if you spread it its only cost you what it cost you.
AFAIK your not ment to be able to sell it on, no idea how that is controlled mind.
