Mini Me is working on a Velcourt farm this year and they have a drill for every day of the week.

This seems to be a popular misconception on here, to go DD/ no till you have to be farming a gazillion acres, which of course is very far from reality.As above, as I thought they made themselves out to be a progressive farming business.
Most of the DD/ no tillers I know personally, in fact I would say all of the DD/ no till farms I know , are family owned and run, in the 500-1000 acre class.

Velcourt are a well respected organisation that offer a service to land owners. I have several friends who are former Velcourt managers. The prime directive is to make money for Velcourt and not necessarily for the client’s maximum advantage.As above, as I thought they made themselves out to be a progressive farming business.
I suspect that with the ending of BPS, Velcourt will be forced to adopt Zero-till a lot more in future.
He’s on largely heavy clay and is totally committed to DD and has been for a good number of years. But he’s also realistic enough to know what will and won’t work.
That’s what I thought.

In a previous life as a contract farmer I was told in no uncertain terms I would not be direct drilling. That was an international land agency. I fully expect as trends have changed that they will now be masturbating vigourously over the new Horsch / whatever offering, whereas at the time when I suggested drilling cereals with the mzuri it was greeted with the same reaction as if I'd shat in their mouths.

Clients prefer to see their land farmed in a certain way perhaps? For someone unused to it, drilling into a load of green matter/cover crop doesn't look right?

in this book (years since I read it), he says, the land in Italy was impoverished (during the Roman times), by large land owners using managers, who were only interested/measured by their profits each season, not how the land was in 10 or more years, hence, "mining" the fertility of the soil.
