Our local nuclear job seems to of only had one cooling tower running for weeks and weeks

. Maybe there isn’t enough water in the Vienne yet to run it full throttle?

I think our local nuclear station is one of two in France that has got corrosion problems in some pipework. I noticed in the press somewhere. :scratchhead:

France got their energy policy right. They had no North sea oil so went nuclear. If only the UK had done that as well.

In the sixties the UK was heading along the nuclear route until I guess the North sea and opencast coal made it uncompetitive. We also went along the gas cooled reactor root whereas the French went with water-cooled models which I think were cheaper to build?

I guess North sea oil and gas and our domestic coal industry were big considerations but also the UK didn't have the ability to forge the pressure vessels. The French made the decision early on to get into the process domestically. The gas cooled designs used graphite (which the British had been playing with since WW2) and concrete. We will still be importing the technology for pressure vessels no matter what designs we build in future.

strangely we have been consistently been exporting to France for weeks now which means our remaining coal stations are going at full whack
Monday Gas was over 60% of production due to the lack of wind

This kind of weather is what really fudges renewables. No wind just dead cold- anticyclonic.

and also causes a huge spike in demand, but of course nothing like the spike when we all have ASHP!

The whole nuclear industry is a ticking time bomb.

The clean up costs have yet to be calculated into the price of the energy!
