If you want to fatten lambs on minimal feed if any you won’t beat a Romney , and cake over £300 ton they are a very attractive option , just got some in this morning fat as butter and nothing but grass and up here .

Please don't tell them all!
It has been a well kept secret for years down here.
We never could afford to buy cake and my Father always said he was allergic to carrying it!

If anyone wants to buy some next year we always have a few to sell.

The buyers are no fools they know whose lambs have been
killing out best. They will probably be seen putting their hands
on sheep from vendors who are less regular at market ,or sell
pens which visibly look uneven.

I can’t see how, apart from a very few pens, the buyers in a mart the size of Welshpool can know who’s lambs are who’s.
Some vendors will be there but most are just stood somewhere nearby to get their prices. Very few are stood in the pens with the lambs.

Do they sell them in the pens? No board to say who the vendor is?

Yes, in the pens, as in every other market I've ever sold lambs at in my life. I thinking running them through a ring, and not weighing them (empty) until sold is more of a Northern peculiarity, with the empty weights reflected in the higher sqq in most Northern marts.

Down here the auctioneer calls out the weights and if they are FA or not, and occasionally mentions the vendor (if he's watching). Other than that, they are bidding on the pen of lambs stood in front of them. A grader will have handled every lamb after weighing (when they arrive) and marked anything deemed to fat or too lean.
