Thomas's approach to growing arable crops to produce milk seems as good as you can get for a high input high output system. (Which is also what you experts want as more milk per cow so reduced maintenance per litre, whereas I think grazing cows seems a far better idea, taking out diesel and machines, but it might not feed the country) If he's using certified Soya, from somewhere like Canada grown by a farmers coop, ideal. Buy in a wee touch of quality, that's not affecting rainforests.

We were told that 90% Soya coming into the country goes to pig 'n poultry, but no consumers ask about that. So we have to play the game and stop out 10%, just so we can answer back and say "No, we don't use any."

Not many buying straight products in the UK? Everyone write about different blends.
I find it way too expensive to help the feedcompanies run their mills. And i don't want all their cheap filler-products added.
I buy non-gmo soya (demand from Arla here), rape meal, rape cake, maize gluten, c16 fat and minerals, and roll my own grain.
I make 2 loads in the TMR mixer a week and have my own blend. I feed for high output compared to most on here.
I have contract on soya and both rape products to mid-23.
I also buy sugar beet pulp and feed grass and maize silage.

The current prices for most of these products are frightening. But then again, the current milkprice is also rare.

I find the same. I’ve no interest in supplying a feed mill with an income. We use multiple brokers.

Would love to but several factors stop me, I don't have a mixer wagon so can't roll my own, I don't have enough cows to warrant decent size loads of different products - if I'm wanting say 18t total with 6 different products that's 3t of each which is a faff for the people supplying so it becomes more expensive and finally I feed it in the parlour so would need a way of blowing it into the cake loft which again is a faff adding to expense.
New feeders finally going in in the spring and then I'll switch to a custom blend so I can choose exactly what goes in it and therefore make sure none of the extra crap gets added

I know it's not for everyone. I build a barn 6 years ago for straight products. It saved me the price in less than 2 years. I get full artic loads of everything, as it's the cheapest way. So yes i have more in stock than 1 load on average. On the other hand, i can stock more if a good offer comes along or i have a few loads left on a cheap contract. I rent grain storage at another farm who doesn't have pigs anymore. It's more work than buying blends for sure, but the price difference is making it my best paid job.

I feed nearly all straights just a little cake.

It's on my wish list for when I eventually move home and expand enough to be able to warrant arctic loads
