Only yesterday I was having a drive round some fields and thinking to myself we need a “state of your crops 2022” thread, bit gutted I didn’t take any pictures now 🤦🏻‍♂️😂. But what I will say, up to now we’ve some of the best looking winter crops I’ve seen in a long time! I’ll have to get some pics on my travels now.

-4 tomorrow. Couple of dry weeks with a cold wind will soon keep them back. But they're looking better than last year. Let's just hope the preems have kept the dreaded blackgalrass down .

Best overall UK performance comes from drier weather. Will be fine now with one inch per month in march, April, may, June, July, then none in August.

I cannot lay my hands on the research paper from the mid 90s that demonstrated upto that date the national yield of wheat was positively correlated, albeit loosely, with years of moderate drought. There being additional above average sun (radiation) when less cloud cover. Will have to hunt for it one day in my filing system.

Only problem I can see is that we will get 1 inch on March 31st another on April 1st followed by a inch on May 31st and a inch on June 1st with nothing when I've put my fert on 🙄

Indeed. Think it was last winter when we had November, Jan and Feb rain between Christmas and epiphany. The soil between the rows of wheat was just a shiney liquid / clay slurry.....

.....did fine in the end.

But improved rooting and fair crops mean I'm happy to shave ten percent n off already.

Exstase drilled 10th November, had some big downpours on it since then but seems to be hanging in there.

More Gleam, drilled 23rd September, the difference in this field compared to last year is unbelievable! It was by far our worst crop of wheat in 2021. Few canary seed volunteers need taking out but looking promising up to now.

What width do you run your autosteer at for drilling?

Looks to overlap a bit. I run mine at 4m, but have quite a few rat runs where running wide. Yours looks better in my opinion.

Hence I won't be posting any pictures of our winter barley!
