Ford 7810 breathing heavy but running ok!!!

Another question..... the same guy that owns the Zetor with leaking front hubs owns a Ford 7810 that breathes very heavy but the odd things about is it uses hardly any oil and pulls good it is worked hard so the bores cannot be glazed there's 8000 hours on clock which is nothing but who knows if hours are correct
The owner is talking of having engine reconditioned which won't be cheap but dismantling and rebuilding ourselves will save a few quid ..are these engines prone to any problems ?

plus they all breath - they are 1980’s/90’s old school Diesel engines.

what oil are you using - you need a good quality 15w40 in them, modern thin oils are no good for these engines, ditto SUTO oils or dealer branded budget oils. Personally we use Morris or Fuchs 15w40 mineral oils in this type of engine. Yes, they breath a bit but that’s normal.

I’d also expect to use about 1 litre of oil every 50 to 75 hours depending on what she is doing and how hard she is being driven.

One of ours spends time on a log splitter and other stationary equipment at low revs, and then the rest of the time is driven quite hard to make up for it to try and avoid glazed bores.

If it’s not using much oil but breathes heavy I would think the valve stem seals have gone a bit hard. You might just need to take the head off.

Ran a good few Ford tractors, back in the day. By 8000 hours they all started to breathe a bit. It's not worth the effort or the expense of doing it up if it starts, runs and pulls OK.

Update..... the 7810 owner is thinking of doing compression test which could be a good idea but will take it to local garage, the only problem there is what happens if a stud breaks ,the tractor will be stranded
