How do you tell when it's time to graze? I've got loads of grass here and conditions are good but the last thing I want is to graze it all off and then run out mid February when I have a load of fresh cows!
I suppose by measuring growth?

for us as an autumn calver and a dry farm it’s easy. First dry run in the new year they go out. We tend to leave some fairly long covers in the autumn so that’s where we start. We burn really easily so find if we don’t get going then our days at grass can actually be really short.
As a spring calver I have no clue

Do you give them a set amount to make grass last until magic day or just hope everything works out

Thats fantastic, but try doing what you do on a farm that won’t carry cows this time of year. By the time we could get our cows on it the grass would be crappy & half rotten. So for us we’ll stick to the sheep eating it.

When there’s a hard frost cows can go straight out after morning milking and as the frost starts to lift bring them in
That’ll all depend wether the sheep are brought in to clear of any grass or you own your own flock of ewes to lamb

2nd cut silage, and been grazed by sheep before 1st cut.
and perfectly happy with it, first cut was similar, 3rd was 18% p, haven't sampled 4th and 5th cuts.
Could have been full of dead, brown crappy grass, but thanks to those sheep, it was all nice fresh green leaf's.
1st cut 17 apr, 2nd 31 may.
so l think l will still stick to grazing those sheep, on my crappy grass, and save the new good stuff for my cows. Who just happen to be milking extremely well.
what suits one, doesn't necessarily suit another.
