Price of pet lambs

They think that every year… yet not many come back for a second go. 4/5 years ago a fella came and took 12 @ £10 each. 5 days later came back for another 8. When asked how the others were doing, “oh we lost 8 in 4 days” 😳😱 they were good lambs when he took them. After careful questioning I found out he had put them in the Croft by the house, no shelter, a bottle of milk morning and night. Now there has been some sharp frosts overnight. Poor little buggers froze too death. I assumed as he had a holding number and had kept sheep before (he claimed) that he had half an idea what he was doing. Needless too say instead of 8 more lambs he got a very severe bollocking and told too get out now. (With a bit more emphasis).
The next year he’s on FaceAche telling everyone that cade lambs are a waste of time and money.
Sometimes people really boil my pee.
And these people breed and have children. :(

Gave 60 away last year at 24/48hrs old in mid April
I'm sure i saved money on them

Even that type are over £100 finished now, having cost around £50. 60 lambs given away is £3k for a bit of effort. You could buy the machine to do it with half the margin from one year…

I do appreciate it doesn’t fit with the shepherdlessing ambitions though.😂

I don’t blame you. I wouldn’t rear hill lambs or any small breed to be honest. A good fast grower type sheep is worth my time but not something that is designed to be ranched and easier care as they aren’t worth enough at the end of it all

Amongst the terminal crosses I had quite a few pure and cross Exlanas. They grew well enough, and are turfed out on forage with the other weaned lambs after weaning off pellets. They are indistinguishable from any of the others now, and selling in amongst them at market at £125-135 so far. That makes them worth messing with in my book. (y)

Fair enough. I’d want them gone long before now though

They could have been if I'd carried on feeding them (another tenner?). It suits my system to chuck them in with my other steadily grown April born lambs, that grow into money with the trade (usually). Chucking them out in the weather for a bit makes them loose those horrible indoor coats too. (y)

Don’t even need to buy the machine plenty places hire them out now

anyone bottle feeding 20+ lambs 2-3 times a day must value there own time and sanity at 20p a hour
