so what ? What the Fuk do you get for £225 quid these days ? How many houses have 1,2,3,4, k a week coming in on Friday night ? Fuk em make them pay we are not a fuking charity .

Interesting to read the Darlington marts fieldsmans thoughts on the lamb trade in the FW today, " By the time a £130 lamb has been transported and slaughtered the resulting 22kg of meat needs to be £250 ,otherwise the margin in beef and pork meat is better" No wonder lamb trade has cooled.

Wouldn’t take a right lot of notice. He had a lot of predictions that they had peaked in 2018 about March time and they continued to rise.

I find it quite strange to read that some on here think lamb is too dear
There’s pages and pages of moaning about costs and low prices then suddenly it’s too high
Especially this year when our costs have rocketed. Farm inflation is 20% but that’s only permitted for inputs?? What the hell???
We are good enough to buy feed at £300 plus that was £250 a year ago Fertiliser for £6/700 that was £280 a year ago chemicals and fuel and everything else the same
Absolutely unbelievable
Yes but your wires are crossed, we arent saying it shouldnt be worth more . We are pointing out there is a ceiling to which the consumer will pay . No point in paying us £200 for lambs and £2500 for fat cattle if there only selling 25% of what we produce because the GP cant or will not afford it. Remember too that the consumer has had rises in living costs just like the rest of us. They arent immune. Money is becoming worthless and prices for everything is nuts.

How do you "make" the consumer pay?

Might start to focus a few minds of what’s important. That’s easy to say I know but everything being cheap hasn’t helped anyone.

How do your suppliers make you pay more ?
They dont , hence why i have cut back and thats what im getting at . You stock the supermarket with meat at double the price it is now and see if you force the GP to buy it! You will go bust before they go hungry as they will change there eating habits. We ought to be fighting/resisting input costs, reduce our output and not be asking for higher prices imo.

Yes i agree but i dont think everything costing tons more is good either, we are going to end up handling huge amounts of money with added risk but for the same margin as before.
You are not going to stop input rises by saying farmgate prices should not rise as well..

All will happen is within 3/4 years at this rate instead of taking 1.2 lambs to buy a roll of bale wrap or 7 lambs to buy a ton of Fert like today it will be be 5 lambs for a roll of bale wrap and 30 lambs to buy a ton of fert and so it goes on.

With such high farm gate inflation across the board for all inputs there is no other option but for farm gate prices to rise as fast as well.

Anything else is just not sustainable either in the short or long term!

And as for that Fieldsman! he should be sacked, he is like to the livestock industry like Boris is to British politics!

If they aren’t selling it I wonder why they are importing it??

Must be knocking on ten years ago now, butcher in local village used to chop up some lambs for me and I happened to ask how much he was charging for his lamb, he produced a leg from out the back an said “if you want that it’s £50”!!
Now that’s ten years ago, so the problem isnt the price we’re getting, the problem is, the men after us can’t take as much profit out of our product as they have been doing for years previously!! They’ll have to adjust their sights to making smaller margins like we have to when our costs go up!! We’re about to start lambing 1400 ewes, me my Mrs an two helpers, me an Mrs doing night and day, alternate nights, couldn’t afford to pay night staff, the lambs ought to be feckin £500 a piece, who else would do it!!

Like @Poorbuthappy i did 20 lambs last year which I sold direct to folk, £190 all in or £95/half, 18-19kg ExlanaX Welsh grass only so lovely tasting lambs.
I had 1 of them ask me the other day could they buy a lamb again this winter and I said would they pay £220-240 depending on the weight and they said no way £195 was the limit.
£125 I’d get if I sent direct and never saw it again.
£40 to transport/kill/cut/vac pack.
£25-30 profit to make it half worthwhile isn’t really worth it, needs to be £40-50/lamb profit to make the hassle worth it for me.

A few years ago 2 Local butcher’s here said to us that 19kg lambs they’d struggle to shift as a half leg worked out around £22 which was above the £20 Sunday dinner budget for most households, they said a 16kg lamb was a good sized half leg or a 22kg lamb gave a 3 piece leg of sizeable meals. That’s purely what 2 butchers said 20 miles apart that I’ve had cut up heifers for me
