Most fodder for sale (cheap or otherwise) is only useful for ticking stock over. It's never going to fatten cattle or make milk without a lot of help.

I must say that I would hesitate in including you in that generalisation, as despite never having seen your bales, we know how you farm.
Most dairy units and beef fattening units know exactly what feed they need because they are feeding 365 days of the year , they dont buy fodder unless under extreme circumstances. Suckler and sheep men buy fodder mostly because its not worth carrying over huge amounts of fodder just in case and usually like this year you can buy fodder cheaper than you can make it. It doesnt need to be rocket fuel either, just average is all thats needed. Dairy and beef rations are so complex now that to mess the stock about with bought in fodder could cost thousands in reduced milk/meat yield.

One plus side of this price nonsense is that it does focus the mind , ive been dithering about rotational grazing for years, now even with fencing costs up plans are in full swing to get it set up and running.
On the arable im thinking if its fit to travel little and often will be best policy after first good dose .
Both things come at a cost obviously but these prices are daft and with the inevitable drop in income at some stage before inputs drop to similar level the head needs a good scratching!!!

I put my name on bulker load of Ammonium Sulphate crystals off local contractor a week ago. (Equiv to 600/t for 34.5%)
Then I got a call of a merchant who was trying to get me to buy last summer at prices that look reasonable now.
I did take a pervesrse satisfaction in saying it was still to much money and I'll manage without this year. ;)
They need the feedback!
I didn't think there was much of that about any more. We used to get a rough blend using it as the backbone. Never grew grass like it!

Out of interest, did you just value the N when doing the price conversion? It's tricky using all of the S in AS.

There is a very real chance of Russia causing a great big war in Ukraine. If that happens then AN will jump up to over £1000/ton in my opinion. Question is, is Western Europe ready for that?
putin has got the EU sewed up, they need gas, he has gas. But a very real threat, and, if he does invade, anything could happen. He has made 1 mistake, he assumed biden would roll over, re nato, which he didn't, and EU are making the wrong noises, it has pushed him into a corner, and it's a back down, or war, or some very diplomatic magic will have to happen.
It seems impossible that war could come to Europe again, but the 70 odd years of peace, since ww2, are probably the longest period of peace since the romans left, not a nice thought at all. And if putin does kick off, will china take advantage of it, and invade Taiwan, so that kicks off over there. For all we know Russia and China, could be talking behind the scenes. Whether it is an actual fighting war, or a massive cyber attack, both mean utter mayhem.
It's a terrifying thing to even contemplate, and just seems so unlikely, we ignore it, but it is a very real threat.
What it means for us, is really down to what Europe, and Nato decide to do, if putin goes into the ukraine, they either roll over, or support ukraine, if they roll over, which country is next, in putins sights, because that is what will happen.
Farming wise, as always, we will be expected to produce more, as international trade routes will be compromised, as you say, any imports from Russia, in the form of energy/fert etc, and components from china, will be impacted, with fall out from that, as well.
It is interesting to note, that while trump was in the white house, these dangers did not occur so easily, and yet he was detested by many countries, as soon as a lame duck, like biden, gets in, USA changes into a 'weak' country. Trump, for all his bad points, was an action man, and any 'incident' was retaliated against.

I was a trump fan. He just did what he wanted and said it as he saw it

It has nothing whatsoever to do with who is in The White House. It has all to do with Putin wanting to expand Russian influence and territory to bring it back to some semblance of a Soviet Union. There is a very very high chance of Russian forces attacking their own side using Ukranian uniforms, imminently, in order to justify an invasion of Ukraine. Just as they did in Crimea some five years or more ago. Putin says that they will not have NATO forces in Ukraine, next door to Russia, yet the paradox is that if they invade Ukraine they most certainly will have several NATO countries right next door to them, so that is not a valid excuse for war at all.

NATO will not intervene militarily to help Ukraine, that much is clear. It is not a NATO country. Western countries, including the USA do promise to increase sanctions and prohibitions on people and trade with Russia like never before, if it comes to it. If we do that though, first thing Russia will do is stop gas exports through Ukraine and the yet to be utilised new direct pipeline. This will freeze, literally, the Ukrainian people and, significantly, most of Western Europe including Germany and the UK. It will cause fertiliser to be basically unavailable at any price, let alone at £1000/ton or more. That, in turn, will cause massive food shortages and price rises unseen since the Second World War and beyond the experience of all but a small number of people left alive in Western Europe today.
