De horning paste

We bought a tube but never used it. Would have given pain relief for our suckler calves if we’d used it. What does a shot of metacam cost… £1.30ish for 1.5ml?
Its more the ease on my own of not having to have a syringe with me as well as trying to get it done when they are few days old and you are have a tussle with them

No scissors or tape here either. Just fold the hair back, stick a dollop of paste on, fold the hair back over and keep calf away from the cow for an hour.

Used Dr Larsson over Hornex for the first time last year and don't like the syringe. Ended up filling a Hornex tub and using a lollipop stick as before.
What don’t u like about the Larsson syringe?
I much prefer it to the hornex. The hornex stuff goes runny, and can leak down the face if you put too much on. Whereas the larsson stuff stays put being more gluey.
I put a bit of marker pen on the wormer tube dial so I know how much I’m putting on !

Larrson stuff is a lot better than hornex.I turn the dial on the tube
1/4 turn at a time.about he size of a pea.more than enough to do the job.I do put it on a lollipop stick to apply it as I find It easier that way.

That's probably where I went wrong. I tried to apply it directly and put too much on. At a busy time of year I didn't persevere, just squirted a heap of it into the empty Hornex tub and carried on. Will definitely try putting it on the stick first when this year comes around.

As an aside, I remember my father dehorning calves at a day or two old with a caustic soda stick, holding it with grease proof paper. It was quick and accurate after scuffing the bud with a penknife. Must have been stored in a sealed jar? Tried to get some years ago to do the odd calf but only Hornex paste on offer. Best result and time saver is to use polled bull. Mostly AA here now.

hi considering useing paste, when do you take the tape off and does the paste not come off when the tape is removed , thanks

I think it needs an hour to work. We just take it off the following morning while feeding them milk. Ours are dairy calves. The paste works it's magic and has gone when the tape is removed. Some calves are born with big buds and need doing straight away and others can take 3 or 4 weeks before any buds appear at all. We do the vast majority at around a week old.

Hats off to the guys who get good results without tape or a calf crush.

I do ours with the paste in a syringe at 5/6 days. If it’s a woolly headed calf I’ll clip a bit of hair off, otherwise just apply it and keep separate from the cow for a while. Tie it all in with tagging and bolusing the cows and it’s usually about an hour before they get back together anyway. I have the burner too for any that show up late and the bought in calves.
Applied properly the paste is bloody good gear and f so Penny appear too bother the calves anywhere near as much as the burner does.
