Russia understood this 1st and 3rd principle of the Memorandum to include foreign meddling ( alignment in their eyes) and tempting it to join them.
1. The Russian Federation, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United States of America reaffirm their commitment to Ukraine, in accordance with the principles of the Final Act of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe, to respect the independence and sovereignty and the existing borders of Ukraine.
3. The Russian Federation, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United States of America reaffirm their commitment to Ukraine, in accordance with the principles of the Final Act of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe, to refrain from economic coercion designed to subordinate to their own interest the exercise by Ukraine of the rights inherent in its sovereignty and thus to secure advantages of any kind...
No coercion when a sovereign state decides for itself on a course of action. (y)

I happen to think it's really positive that you and a few others are making this thread have a proper discussion about the events but,

I do now think you have gone full circle.

You started of blaming this conflict on the west for provoking Russia with things like posting troops near its borders .....
and now it's the 'West's' fault for not doing that.
Slight mistake, I said the West should have made it plain & reinforced the border on the West's side of Ukraine not into Ukraine, the West did provoke this by allowing Ukraine to believe it would eventually join the EU & NATO, it may not have been fair on Ukraine but for such a divided country to join would have been impossible & they should have been told that clearly.

Firstly ask me a question rather than assume and look silly. My heart is full of determination and sadness.

Secondly I have updated my view slightly since first posting on this subject.

The best Russian soldier in Ukraine is the one shooting at his comrades/sabotaging his vehicle/f**king off home/surrendering.

The second best Russian soldier in Ukraine is a dead one.

We get to a beginning of a resolution to this when either dictator vlads orc hordes are defeated, rebel against Putinism, or the dictator is removed from power.

He must and will fail in Ukraine, he's a malignant cancer on humanity.
This post does not sound determined or sad. It is very angry and vengeful . That kind of thinking is fine if you are Ukranian but useless if you are not.
I agree that this is a disaster for everyone. Unlike you I do not wish for more death and destruction- for anyone ,Russian or Ukranian. I cannot imagine how this will end. It is a tragedy.

Endless sympathy, the EU could have fast tracked Ukraines application to join immediately & intervened but many EU countries don't want them so it won't happen, an alliance of EU countries the UK plus the USA could have intervened but they won't, instead they all just stand back give token assistance & watch it all happen, all of them wishing it wasn't being seen on our TV screens!
Fast tracking Ukraine into the EU & into the Common Defence Policy would have been very dubious without Ukraine fulfilling the full requirements for entry and fraught with issues because the NATO policy would still stand - likewise if the UK went in on its own, the moment a British or unit from a NATO country gets attacked Article 5 applies & NATO gets dragged in.

Not really a mistake as it amounts to the same thing.

Would parking loads of gear in Poland be provocative or completely useless if not willing to cross into Ukraine?

Eventually could be a while.

May have been provocative but no more than Putin's build up of troops on the border, we keep having people saying a line in the sand must be drawn but where are we prepared to draw that line?

Yes. My guess is that America doesn't want to get involved & has made it clear to its NATO allies that if anyone goes out of their way to get attacked then they will quit NATO - which plays straight into Putins hands. The bulk of NATO wouldn't want to fight without the bulk and tech that comes with American involvement - particularly if he does come Westwards, so have to go along with the no-involvement routine.

When I said Ukraine should have been told clearly that they would not be joining I am talking about before all this started & Ukraine started raising the red flag to Putin as it being a possibility. Many will say this is grossly unfair to Ukraine but when was life ever fair?
