Ukraine are going to be strugling to plant wheat leaving the world short of wheat, this government need to look at a scheme to plant wheat instead of trees and solar panels
when will they wake up or will it take until we run out of food? I feel very sorry for the farmers in Ukraine as well as the people in the cities.
I agree about the tree planting but solar can be a quick and easy way of producing power to replace gas and oil shortages.

Spring barley maybe but late now for spring wheat?

Pondering this today. Hardly a great prize but I may be offered 30 acre of land to rent, all in 4 acre fields. Self regenerated wild oats made into hay & very few inputs for the last 60 years.

I was going to reseed it for sheep grazing, maybe summer fallow in preparation for early sown wheat? I have small kit, for small fields mega money even to fence it. The summer fallow would be turnips grazed off early.

The area for winter wheat was set before Christmas Australia and Argentina excepted
spring wheat in Canada and norther USA
the biggest issue for 2022 harvest is price and availability of nitrogen fertiliser
the same for 2023 harvest

Just became more of an issue for some as two boat loads of fertilizer just got turned away from canada. It’s great to show solidarity with sanctions but how many farmers are going to be burnt by this. Most will have pre paid and borrowed the funds to do this.

Back on topic, Ukraine 25% of the worlds black soil. Does anyone know the geological reason for that, it has been farmed for a long time.

Yeah, in that climate the organic matter from the perennial grasses that dominated the natural vegetation did not break down and accumulated under the millennia of grazing. With cold winters and hot summers where the evaporation is high the nutrient content is not leached, nor does the organic matter rot down as in the warm wet UK soils so they don't become acid as our soils will do in the natural state.

In wetter regions the chernozems get leached and form forests and in drier region become saline or sodic and tend to desert.

The wheat will all have been planted in the backend?

Or do they just grow spring wheat?

We have turned away ship loads of diesel and are running short. France and Holland took in the turned away ships.

Very charitable of them to take the diesel. Thats how sanctions fail to do as intended sometimes. I very much doubt diesel will be shipped in from other sources to steady an inflamed market. Another example of government’s not giving a f about certain sectors. As long as they appear to be the good guys.

It was the dockers refusing to unload, not government sanctions at that point.
