Are they going to plant oil crop, OSR or sunflowers or cereals? Imo production will be about 3.5 million tons 'extra' or 3.5t per hectare planted, ie half a million X 3.5.

Any moves to increase cropped area in France?
Alot round here , If you are hungry , cant afford food or cant source feed and straw for your stock and pay taxes. Whilst your neighbours get paid not to crop with tax payers money - I guess it might leave a "funny taste " in ones mouth as they say .

But saying that I'm adding peas into my planting this spring.
I had planned spring barley for the cattle as feed this coming autumn/ winter so really needed a protein.

Ukraine and Russia are responsible for 30% of the entire worlds exportable wheat crop.
The Russian took a look at the state of their wheat coming out of the Winter as stated that it is the worst they have ever known!
So 1 million ha of extra German crops might help Germany’s trade deficit and provide some food for its population, but is pretty insignificant as to the rest of the World.
However, despite being Top Dog of the EU, it does show that Germany is taking its own Food security seriously.
Whereas in the UK, our Government is asleep to the situation and continues to advocate taking land out of food production!

Can I make a minor correction? Ukraine is a similar size to France - or at least it was the last time that I was there. According to the World Bank, Ukraine has 413,000 squ kms of arable land compared to 286,000 squ kms in France. But yes you are correct that it is a major exporter of maize, wheat, barley and sunflower. Its ports are also main export routes for grain from Russia and Kazakhstan.
