The buds which are yellow/brown are not opening?
Nipped by frost?

What’s the weather been like the past few nights. Unlikely to be frost as the leaves don’t look touched. Sterile sites here are usually associated with heat blasting. Above 28c and low humidity the flowers will dry up before being pollinated. Helps to have bees in the field working the morning shift.

We have bees, but have had a few hard frost’s, my guess it’s the latter?

Yes it's the frosts of late, seen it before, sure it'll be fine unless it gets flattened by the snow due tomorrow.....!!! We had snow once when it was in full flower, flattened the lot and never recovered, a long long time ago now

My first thought was frost, isn't there also a weird micronutrient deficiency that can affect flowering?

Sulphur deficiency can lead to aborted flowers
Cut the bottom of some stems open. Flea beetle damage.

A lot of the OSR I have seen looks a thin stand. It looked well before Christmas but now looks gappy.

Always the same- looks a great crop pre-Christmas. Then you drive by in March and wonder what happened. Usually flea beetle is the cause.
