Towing stuff about in tandem

Trailer loaded has to be behind the tractor then the trailed applinces
Don't think so, was at a presentation by Mike Braithwaite years ago and he had a picture of a trailed potato harvester pulling a fully loaded approx 12 ton tipping trailer . He said it was legal that way, but not the sensible way with the harvester being pulled by the trailer.

Why not. I pull a ute on a dolly behind my trailer sprayer here
I was thinking the same thing. A bloke I have seen had the ute and fuel cart been pulled by the rock picker on the tractor. Ex local contractor ( rough operator) had a drill, roller, grouper on a dolly trailer and the maintenance box trailer behind. Flat out with no plans of slowing down. But again if it was illegal to tow two trailers does that mean towing an air seeder bar and cart setup to be illegal?

might be a state thing. Recently got a stoll sprayer and they won’t supply parts for me to weld a hitch on the back. Stating it’s illegal. Have been towing with my old sprayer for years past the cops etc. goldacres fit hitches to theirs from factory.

Again it shows what an ass UK laws are around transportation. If between us we cant answer such a question with any certainty before reaching a second page on the thread there is something fundamentally wrong with the relevant law or how it is presented!! It is no wonder in the end many JFDI.
What comes about when the lawmakers have never driven anything more complex than a car

Why can’t it be boiled down to “Is it safe?” Provided it can stop safely within a reasonable distance given it’s braking capacity, weight and top speed and provided its adequately signed and lit and overall length is within a given maximum then what’s the problem? Any more prescriptive rule is just pedants corner and too complex to understand.

to be fair there are several aspects regarding safety.
Firstly is that while many outfits will maintain the kit and and ensure everything is working correctly before it leaves the yard.
On the other hand there are many outfits where the grease gun has never been seen and lights brakes etc are an optional extra.
Then there is the issue of cornering which is why the rules first came about, certain trailed vehicles will cut corners due to the nature of the geometry and should never be paired. Many trailed implements also were not designed for towing anything but ancillary attachments and certainly not a 3 tonne low loader with 8 tonnes of Teleporter on top.
And lastly some outfits deem it OK for young lads who have just passed a test to tow these combinations.
I have no time for those who argue this combination needs red and that needs white, the rule should be what is safe to other road users and by standers, I suspect a fair few are not.

Nothing good ever came from a swivel chair

Been watching this thread develop. To try & end the confusion UK road vehicle legislation (C&U Reg 83) states that a Wheeled Agricultural Motor Vehicle (i.e. a tractor) may tow either:-

- Up to two unladen Agricultural Trailers
- One Ag. Trailer (may be laden) + One Ag. Trailed Appliance (trailed implement)
- Up to two Ag. Trailed Appliances

In all instances the Ag. Trailers will require brakes (assuming it's over 750 kg max. gross weight): the Ag. Trailed Appliances may also require brakes depending upon it's Gross Weight, it's ratio of unladen to laden weight or if it's towed above 20 mph.

If it was me I'd put the (braked) trailer behind the tractor & tow the Chipper behind the trailer. Depending on the design / weight of the chipper, this may not require brakes. But if the trailer was a 'car' (Ifor) trailer rather than an Ag. Trailer then things change & the above no longer applies.
