Simple enough question.
Do you enjoy farming?

Its maybe just the springtime madness and the last couple of days in particular but I can't remember the last time I actually enjoyed doing farming.

I just feel torn out with it all and the never ending shite that seems to head my way.

Fuel, fert, energy prices, some tosser coming to inspect me, cows being a pain, dealing with muppets all the time, etc, etc

I honestly cant think of when i got some satisfaction from anything farming related, even doing stuff I used to enjoy Im thinking about some hassle or another.

Others I ask seem to feel the same, a general "fed up-ness" with it all.

So is it just me then?

Yes I know exactly what you mean, it's because it is an addiction.
Everyone says go on holiday or take a break from it, but if you're like me, within 24-48 hours you'll be wanting to get home because there's "things to do"

I think my biggest problem is - never mind glass half full or glass half empty - if the glass is 90% full I'll still be worrying about the other 10%.

I know I'm not the only one. The best thing you can do is talk to someone about it - a problem shared is a problem solved. I've battled mental health issues in the past & I am fighting it off regularly.

Yes and no. Enjoy the doing, the pulling together and beating the odds be it weather, machinery or actually managing to sell stuff at a reasonable price.

Fairly well scunnered with the endless hangers on, the auditors, the compliance teams who need reams of pointless paperwork, the cocks inventing rules/standards to justify their existence, the “experts” who if they were that good, should be farming themselves, the office bods who get their knickers in a twist about something and need the world to stop (but only important between 9 and 5, not weekends, bank holidays, or during annual leave, then the “important” thing is ok to wait a fortnight for them to return from Marbella…….. then it’s top priority again and all else must yield in its pursuit).

The practical side is enjoyable, the theory is not.

Despite being a bit down about the financial side and the lack of backing from the government I do really enjoy farming itself.
There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing crops or livestock thrive. I love it in that respect. Started in the garden as soon as I was big enough to handle a small spade I’d been bought at the seaside. It never loses its magic, despite setbacks.

I enjoy the farming. I enjoy learning, I enjoy the challenge.

As a Lifestyke it’s hard to beat, but I’m prob a bit of a workaholic and always striving to find new things to do to diversify the farm.

And that is the issue. Non farming income is doing great, farming income ok , as long as you ignore the hours against each.

I’d be bored without the livestock and farm work I suspect.

My trouble is it’s such a massive amount of jobs to to , I ask myself I work all summer saying ahh but it’s quiet in the winter yet looking back in the diary I’ve worked pretty much every day in the winter and don’t really feel much further forward , I have been depressed in the past and now find myself feeling in a similar state as then tho I’ve. Not sought “help “ this time. Various pressures family , work , mortgage balance ,all manageable but very stressful I’m not poor but I feel I have a very difficult balancing act to perform every day. Feel better for writing this post and getting it out.

I do but then I don’t have the worry of the financial side being an employee, having said that it does wear you down the constant feeling of being criticised by all and sundry in the media
