I fear this is a thread that can,t have a winner, too many good engines have been made. The perkins have made some great engines, like the one in my MF 40 b we had, but for shear pulling power and fantastic torque, the cummins sounded great, started in cold weather and was reliable.

Any of the Neuss built Into engines really but if its got to be one then the 239 is a little cracker
We had a 674 with that engine. Flat as a fart compared with The Perkins 236 in our Massey 168 and the head cracked after only 5 years. Swapped it for a Renault with The 4 pot MWM .(I could never understand the nomenclature on those engines, it was called a D226-4 I believe which makes it sound as if it was only 226 cu in when actually it was 256!) Now that was a good engine .💪

When I was still at school in the 80s Dad bought a Steiger Bearcat with a Big Cam 855. 14 litres and "only" 225Hp. Its probably still running somewhere. Never felt the same about the Case 4690 that replaced it.

the Big Cam 855 was used in a whole range of equipment, including both Versatile & Steiger tractors. From memory, it went from about 180 hp up to at least 350 hp . . .

Something that occurs to me, if a certain engine make tended to be fitted in a premium price machine, then might said machine have a higher quality level of maintenance which in turn leads to longevity?
The question also could be interpreted in a way such as which engine made the largest contribution, and it may be that there was not much choice.
I have never owned one but the MWM engines appear to have been very good, looking at high houred older Fendts and some very unloved Renaults. The IH 358 and 466 engines must be up there?

Big capacity and simplicity win for me. I don't really know much about engines, but I'm not sure how many if the above have fancy electronics and adblu.

Neuss

haven’t heard of them for years

not only International tractors, but International trucks used to run them back in the day

from memory, they weren’t that popular here, Perkins or Cummins were a more favoured choice in the trucks

“all neuss ( noise ) & no power” was what everyone called them 🤣 🤣
