How much for selling a cut of grass silage?

So due to business reduction and circumstances this year I may have some surplus grass to sell from June, I would aim to sell it to a neighbour with him silaging it, but how much would I charge per tonne fresh weight over the weighbridge in the new world of high fert prices etc etc?

I would be putting the fert on, he would just literally turn up to silage it and incur the costs of harvesting.

All good quality grass leys that would do for dairy cows.

Cost of annual rent divided by 4 (for 12 weeks of grass, even if its only 8 weeks, add the extra month since its prime time of year)
Plus cost of fertiliser application
Plus cost of replacing nutrients (may or may not be done by the farmer silaging)

Thats by the area rather than ton. When it comes to selling by the ton, we shoot for £100-110t/DM. Probably be more like £140 this year (Around £40/t fresh!)

Whilst fert is dear I think a lot are packing up so it could be a strange year and level out as everything will be cut up and down

I heard this morning that a patch of grass keep ,fenced and watered, made £310 acre .From 15 April and cattle till end of Sept and sheep till end Oct

Indeed. Apparently some people go to the effort of baling and wrapping it and even then are pleased just to be able to give it away.....

It used to be £6/green bale, (taker does all the mowing-carting away) that was before inputs inflation

If decent crop I would have thought £150 to £200 per acre.

Run short of silage last two weeks ,bought some for £20 no problem.On this basis think I will by all my silage this coming winter.

I pay £120 an acre and get 3 cuts of silage having applied roughly 350 kg of fert an acre at £944 a tonne.I get 20 bales an acre for all 3 cuts =£450÷20 bales =£22.50 a bale and we haven't started with cost of doing the job.

In round bales £26 a bale

Think about the nutrient off take at the very least. P and K offtake could be substantial if yield is heavy. If you wanted to keep the buyer sweet for a potential arrangement in future I would say he pays you X an acre but also agrees to put his slurry back on it?

I would tell him that the price you sell at will depend on how much fresh weight is sat there after mowing. If it is a lighter crop because the weather was dry then it will be less painful for him and less nutrients being taken away for you.
