I hear there’s always a queue at 5 am there, not that I’ve ever seen it.
You must reckon it’s worth the effort. I’m just going to check round the lambing hoggs, then I’ll load my few fat hoggs up and drop them down to Welshpool, trying to avoid the lightest weighbridge.

Have to say I’m not to sure on the cold causes it theory . How can the cold cause a bacterial infection ? Worked with sheep in some cold places and never had bother.Not according to a useless vet I ones talked to. She said that was a stupid theory , It would be down to dirty sheds even though these ewes had never come in. Also never heard of ewes dieing of mastitis.
But some farms do seem to get bad goes . Was at a place couple years ago , out of 180 Cheviot Mule gimmers the boy must have had 30 odd gone bad of bag ! Unlucky or something to do with breeding ?

i think a lot of sheep carry the infection a lot of the time from bedding / dirty ground ,usually they can fight it off , the cold lowers the blood supply on tender areas which allows infection to take hold ,

We rarely get it in sheltered fields but can guarantee if wind comes from the east and ewes are in east facing fields on the side of a hill they will get black bag .
Iv got one field I just can’t put ewes and lambs in not. The east wind blows up it and get so many bad bags (20 out of 50) one year.

Just read in FG that exports of lamb have reached pre-Brexit levels with volumes up 37% year on year. The EU was the main destination. Perhaps explains why the prices for export type lambs and hoggs has been so good this year.
Mules with short tails (or no tails like some I have) and big udders rearing 2 twins are a barsteward for it here.

Yes and if you get that combined with lying on frozen ground like we had last spring you know what's going to happen

I left there just after half 5 and there was no queue the place was empty and not many sheep in from the night before, you could still end up on the first scales
