Lad who used to work here had and scans a lot of sheep locally had a 3 litre hi lux but bashed it up and replaced it with a newer 2.4 and absolutely hates it, and it’s cost him a fair bit replacing the clutch.
So much so he has bought an old shogun for driving about the farm which is auto and says he wished he’d bought one sooner, thinks it great.
 
No costly dual mass flywheel to worry about with an auto, if doing a lot of towing the auto is a no brainer, the newer auto boxes are more than up to it. Only down sides are as Hally pointed out above, you will lose some mpg and the servicing usually costs a bit more.

In the old days back when they only had 4 forward gears they were numb and dumb but modern ones all have at least 6 or even 8. Throw in an ultra smooth V6 (or bigger) and it's a joy.

I'm not sure how many of these modern automatics are 'sealed for life' but they could probably do with their (often very high spec) oil being changed at 40-50,000 miles to ensure longevity.
Anyone with a mechanical mind has been doing that since the mid 90's.

It's Easy enough.... should see the the colour of the sh!t that comes out of the Merc 722 boxes.

I was in Houston with work not that long ago and the yank tank hire car had a four speed auto gearbox, it was horrendous. I couldn't believe a modern car would have something so awful fitted....

I was always a HiLux doubter but recently had a 2.4 for getting about, only a single cab but I've been so impressed with the Active spec. It's got A/C and a bluetooth radio so what more can you ask for from a work truck?
Took 5x roughly 500kgs weanlings away 30 miles on Monday and the power button makes one hell of a difference, like a different truck when pressed, not my D4 but you know what I mean.

+1 for a new HiLux and I can only imagine the 2.8 must be a beast... AUTO all the way though

Can you get the active in an auto spec? That would be ideal for me but often have to go for a higher spec than needed to get the auto.
 
I thought automatics all have torque converters but I was wrong
Some have dry clutches which are more responsive

Not a "proper" automatic.

An automatically shifted manual box.

99% of auto HGVs use this type of setup, along with a lot of small modern cars.
Transit vans were available with "ASM" at one point, as were mercedes sprinters.

It gets you an automatic transmission with the fuel economy of a manual

I went to buy a new hilux about a year ago and they gave me a price that makes your eyes water then started with crazy delivery times ,,, oh ok keep the fuking thing im not interested , still got okd one and will just replace with less old one when its finally totaly fooked they can stick their leed times and extortionate prices where the sun no shine as far as im concerned .
