wont cover creep bill for many , maybe on first draw or two , its all the rest that will cost . im pulling feeders out after 6 weeks old if there is grass in front of them this year .

I would love to know what happened at Sedge today because they should never be over 20ppk less than Exeter on the same day!

( especially given they only had 961 lambs at sedge for the SQQ and Exeter had 2400 and over 2600 head of spring lambs including the heavy's! )

I thought the stirk trade was not great on Sat at Sedge but their spring lamb trade today is just shocking.

So what’s your take on sedgemoor. Every now and again something happens and everything goes pear shaped. It can’t just be down to one person. Can it?
I really do not understand why it was so bad today with the spring lambs at sedge given the hoggs were well up on the week!

Guess perhaps it is just down to supply and demand and sounds like from some reports there is a lot of spring lambs coming out across the country for this early in the season than normal.

Most of mine will be going on red clover seeds ( that would normally be cut ) and only get a handfull of cake to make it easier to handle them.

Had a text on Friday to say the cake has gone up another £60 tonne which now means it has gone up by over £135 tonne since the start of the year! just getting beyond a joke now!

I wonder if there are too many hoggs about spoiling the spring lamb job.
We could do with lambs getting off to a good start
If these spring lamb prices are where we are at then i would not want to be selling breeding sheep this year!

Exeter had their May sale last week of Dorsets, ram trade was off the charts but commercial breeding ewes were hard going and well down i am told ( not seen the figures ) on the year by people who were selling! trade would be down £25/30 head at least for breeding ewes it sounded like!

There were some cracking first drawn lambs there this morning. I expected the average. But those guys must be gutted. Especially when Exeter did so well with so many.

45 kgs at £3 isn't a disaster though, hopefully they might lift a bit yet although it usually only goes one way from here!

We wont restart that argument on my return;)

But £135 for a 45 kilo lamb in real terms would have only been £105 at most 12 months ago! and no one would have been happy with £105 12 months ago in May that is for sure!

£100 head has been suggested for spring lambs in the summer this year so in real terms that would have only been £70 head 12 months ago for spring lambs and where would that put stores last year? £40/50 head for the short keep lambs 12 months ago?.. would not be feasible in either the short or long term are those prices for the store lamb or prime seller so why is this year an exception? !

Sedge only averaged £124 head for spring lambs today!

I looked the other day at Exeter and for last week 12 months ago they averaged £141 head, last Monday they averaged £133 head so about £8 head less on 12 months ago.

Sedge today would be about £20 head less than 12 months ago so add on another £20 head at least in increased costs v 12 months ago and that is in real terms £40 head drop on 12 months ago!

These prices may be where we are at currently but i do not think many seller's will be very happy with current price's for spring lambs!

I would not hold too much in early breeder sales at that sale. After all it’s pretty much a single breed based sale for the Dorset set.

Sale at end of this month will be more telling I think. I ve rams entered.

Someone quoted that figure of the National breeding flock halved since foot and mouth . That’s a stark figure yet prices haven’t moved upwards that much. Where the hell did all that lamb used to end up. Export I expect

Have said before that the world is going to get hungry, but for that to happen we will feel the pain first .......not like it would have been at one time 🙁🙁🙁

The world has cut oil, gas, electricity, wood, steel, fert supplies ,the list is endless of things in short supply and inflation is soaring on these products!!!!
I on the other hand am a farmer and am very resilient by nature , lambing has went ok and calving is going fine, the Winter grain is looking well in fact I may produce a similar if not slightly greater amount of produce than last year so why oh why aren’t I getting the price my goods deserve to be ???

Thousands and thousands of those light hill lambs went live too France and Spain. Markets that we don’t utilise anymore.

Well the only good news i have had in the last week is that Fert prices have dropped a shade from their recent highs and you can now buy 33% N or 27+9s for about £685 ton!
