Steel price

Seems to be the way with everything. I'm sure they will blame shipping cost etc. But iron ore has basically halved in price since May. Someone is making money.

Same as fuel prices shooting up after the so called ‘shortage’. We’re all back at it now as before like nothing happened and fuel prices have remained high. Had this conversation with my timber supplier when he said it’s hard to get timber but his yard has always been fully stocked throughout...funny that isn’t it? let’s say he wasn’t best pleased I called him out on it..

Think this is what is meant by peoples inflation expectations becoming "unanchored". Psychologically people now believe we are in a rising price environment due to being told that from the media etc talking about shortages.

Some then seek to buy what they want now no matter the price because if they wait it will be even more expensive or maybe even un affordable in the future. Thus driving prices higher. Once people exhaust themselves maybe prices will return to some sort or normality. Maybe...

But not wheat………🤭🤞

Heard this all started with the Australian PM asking for an investigation on whether covid came from a lab in Wuhan. The Chinese government didn't like it and went for a trade war on coal, stopping all imports from Australia.

This has resulted in them not having the right coal to produce coke, so they cant produce steel. In addition their energy comes from coal power stations and due to the now incredibly limited supply they are on a 3 day working week to stretch it out while they try and sort it. At one point I think they only had about 9 days worth of coal left in the country.

Prices of ore are low because they can't use it, prices for us are high because they can't make it fast enough.

There or thereabouts for stock lengths. Will be considerably more if you order cut to length due to the wastage factor and how economically it cuts from the donor bars. Tubes and plate are north of 2K/ tonne.

think it was 1600 stock bars or 1700 cut and shot blasted.
Handy to have them cut it to size rather than attacking it with the gas.

Can't see it coming down any time soon. The warehousing market is still booming, I read there is currently 2.8% of all warehousing currently available and the enquiries in Q1 were highest ever so they will keep on building. We have seen the increase in costs has just meant the investors are looking at a payback over a couple of extra years which they are accepting.

Some interesting conversations with manufacturers at Lamma last week, If you thought buying diesel was a nightmare, try being a trailer manufacturer. Steel prices only valid on a daily basis and supply of pretty much all other components impossible to predict delivery on.
Talking to a lad near us the other night who builds ATV trailers, snackers etc saying the same regarding delivery and is now ordering wheels and tyres two years in advance.
