Sucklers anyone miss them ?

I would seriously miss my cows if they went. Only a small herd of 8 breeding cows, Hereford X British Friesian, live out all year, heifers and cows bulled to a Hereford for 6 weeks max, heifers to calve at 24 months, eat forage only and are placid and easy to handle. Calfs sold at 9 months.
Out in the field now, 5 have calved and waiting for the last three to get on with it. Rotate them round the fields with the ewes and lambs.

Found if i breed them any older as heifers you end up with big cows that produce same sized calfs as smaller cows but eat and trample much more.

I have a few BBx out of Holsteins that I put an Angus on, they calve easily and have tons of milk and no creep needed and are quiet, never calved one yet or had to suckle the calf to mother, fairly easy keepers.

We put Hereford bull on Saler heifers.

It's easy for me to say but they shouldn't be wild. Just weed out wild ones and cull them.

We have a 2 or 3 that would kill you at calving. Out of over 400.

The only thing different this year to previous is we changed the bull if the cows stay the bull will be going .

You can flog herd tax free .

Just calved 25 2 yearolds , what smashing mothers they are , kind little things .

Just been thinking of buying a shorthorn bull to cross with saler to see if that makes a quieter cow while still retaining easy calving traits. It's not easy and my sympathies when you have a bad calving. I think we have all been there!

Try a south devon x with saler, thats what we have and they are lovely and quiet
